Before Covid, I got my hair cut twice a year, for free at the 'beauty' school in the city. I haven't had a haircut in 18 months. Never had anyone else shave me, and I quit shaving years ago.
Years ago, (1990s?) I used to go to a barber that charged $5 for a cut, who gave free beer while you waited. It wasn't great beer but what do you want for free?
I've had the same woman cut my hair for the last 14 years. She does a cut, wash, hot towel, scalp massage, and style. When I first started going to her, she charged $20, I think. Years later, I asked her what she was charging so that I could increase my payment based on current market. She told me there was no need to, and that I was grandfathered in to the old rate. I wasn't going to let her do that, so over the years I've been increasing what I give her. Once COVID started, she's even providing masks, hand sanitizer, etc. I now pay her $40 including tip.

Why do you tip the hair salon and not the barber? ~Roselvr
I live in small blue-collar enclave where tipping "traditional" barbers has never been common; the stylist at the salon is a friend and former tenant of mine, but I only patronize his salon for about every third haircut -- and I tip him.

I cut my guys hair and trim his beard. I am not a fan of long hair and beards on a man, but it’s his head and face….
We’re it up to me I’d shave him clean and cut his hair short. Lol
I've been cutting my own hair for the past 5 years and hope to never look back.
Back when I went to barbershops, I paid between $15-20 on average (excluding tip). There was one time when I was living in DC and I went to some barbershop that didn't have a price list. The barber charged me $50 before tip Needless to say that was the only time I got my hair cut there.
Regarding haircuts - previous barber would charge me $10 to $12 and I would give a $5 tip. The current barber is charging $18 and I still give a $5 dollar tip. He charges more but he is very close to my house. Anyway for the past year I have been cutting my own hair, except for the back which my girlfriend cuts.
Regarding shave -- never had a shave from a barber. I think that is mostly an old fashioned thing that barbers used to do before home razors were mass produced. I guess some guys still like it.
Don't know how much prices are nowadays/during & since COVID, but pre-COVID, my fiance' went to a few good places that were $10-15 for a haircut. (Shaves are N/A to him. He does that himself.)
When I had a full head of hair a few years back, I paid around $10 to $12 plus tip.
Now that I am pretty much bald, I use the clippers by myself to do it, then go to a Great Clips salon when they run a special every few months for them to straighten/trim up the back of head and neck.
Their specials usually are $6.99/$8.99 plus tip. In fact, they have a special this week.
