Wasn't there a time where that was considered in bad taste? Same goes for asking about age. When did that get thrown out the window? Thick or thin, I just feel like it's incredibly rude.
When did it become acceptable to ask anyone about their physical characteristics/appearance? Being tall I get asked constantly how tall I am or did I play basketball(did-still do). Next time it happens I'm going to ask that person (usually fat) how much they weigh or some other weight related health issue that they could have based off the way that they look. I'll let you know the responses/looks I get.
Tabloid journalism really cranked it up in the 90s.
The let-it-all-hang-out sort of talk shows also changed society. A lot of destructive taboos have disappeared over the years. People are much more inclined to talk openly about anything and everything.
Even the Internet has changed things... look at what gets discussed in these forums. Lots of detailed stuff about appearance, health, grooming, etc.. I guess people carry on with it offline too.

It depends on the setting. Its totally acceptable to discuss this here in an online forum pertaining to health/fitness and even relationships because its valid discussion of the topic at hand.
Probably not so acceptable to discuss or ask a stranger about her weight. Most women I know are totally open and cool with discussing their weight. Mainly because they are proud of it.
are we talking about men asking this or women? I think only like two guys in my lifetime has asked my weight...most know not to go there or get beat!..lol never had other women ask... its very rude because its always a sensitive subject for women
I've never had anyone ask me about my weight or age....I don't think it would bother though. I'm not sensitive about either one. At most I'd be shocked someone was that nosey.

This is rude and demeaning. You are not telling the deli how you want your cheese slices.
The "Lose 5 pounds in the first week" commercials contribute to the increased obsession about weight loss. Those companies obviously need to make money to stay in business so they will continue with their rants.
