I agree with you.

I am a feminist at heart. I still feel there is nothing wrong with being ladylike.

I am not crazy about the term "ladylike" I prefer the word feminine. I don't want to be like a man.

I think Michelle Obama is a perfect example of ladylike. She holds herself well, good manners, classy with her clothes and presents herself well.

[quote=ciceropolo;38486556]I think Tom Jones summed it up well....

Well she's all you'd ever want,
She's the kind they'd like to flaunt and take to dinner.
Well she always knows her place.
She's got style, she's got grace, She's a winner.
She's a Lady. Whoa whoa whoa, She's a Lady.
Talkin' about that little lady, and the lady is mine.
Well she's never in the way
Always something nice to say, Oh what a blessing.
I can leave her on her own
Knowing she's okay alone, and there's no messing.
She's a lady. Whoa, whoa, whoa. She's a lady.
Talkin' about that little lady, and the lady is mine.
Well she never asks for very much and I don't refuse her.
Always treat her with respect, I never would abuse her.
What she's got is hard to find, and I don't want to lose her
Help me build a mountain from my little pile of clay. Hey, hey, hey.
Well she knows what I'm about,
She can take what I dish out, and that's not easy,
Well she knows me through and through,
She knows just what to do, and how to please me.
She's a lady. Whoa, whoa, whoa. She's a lady.

I know a lead singer who performs this every time his wife walks into the room.

I agree with this. It pays off to be more "feminine" or ladylike in the long run. Too many women think they need to be masculine in order to be taken seriously or "strong."

So...am I following that someone who holds themselves well, has good manners and is classy in their clothing choices and presents well....is ladylike or feminine as opposed to "like a man"? That definition, to me, is all encompassing - traits that could well be applied to a man as a woman.

If this is off-topic, I apologize, but I've been wondering how to be "ladylike," too. It's not a skill women are born with, and I need more help than most because I'm not really good with people in general. This would be okay, if I had an acceptable alternative, but I don't really have one.

We are discussing ladylike. If you want to talk about what is it to be a gentlemen, I guess if could be the same traits. Maybe just a classy individual has those traits, including bending at the knee to pick up something (gosh I hate to see someone's ass up in the air!).

I think Jackie O and Michelle O are classic examples of being a lady.

Being ladylike is timeless, no?
Um...kinda no, yes!

Being Lady-like means being respectful of yourself. Gracious.

As the term would suggest, "carrying yourself like the Lord's Lady. The Lady of the Manor." Maybe even a regal bearing.

As an example, you can expect Kate Middleton to usually act Lady-like in public. In their private chambers, she may curse and sprawl about like a drunken sailor for all we know; but when seen by the general public, will most likely be carrying herself, dressing, speaking/talking with a sense of grace and dignity - in that Lady-like manner that fits the situation.

Hats and gloves are optional. Some cultures are into them while others are not.
