I used to mean "cute" as someone I could date. I used "handsome" to mean someone that was good looking not necessarily dateable.

Now I am married and I use them interchangeably. I think cute is a combination of good looking and nice.

I normally say cute in reference to a man's more boyish features, an adorable smile paired with smooth skin and softer less chiseled features. Handsome is more of a guy's guy description. One person can embody both at certain times. Now that i think about it, it feels like it is more about how I end up viewing their looks + the way that they carry themselves and not just their features.

Can depend on the age and/or style of the guy.
Older would be handsome
Younger or baby faced would be cute

The masculinity of the guy, rugged vs pretty boy
Facial Hair vs no facial hair
Chest Hair vs Shaved/ Nothing
