It seems that after quite a mild winter so far, we may have a few days and nights of cold temperatures moving into the interior starting today (Saturday January 20), and continuing through next week.

Also, did any of you had a ground-shaking experience Friday? It was a good size tremor

Well, it seems that we "Fairbanks residents" who visit this forum are hunkering inside our homes because it is extremely cold this week, and probably the next. If anybody is interested in knowing how cold it is in Fairbanks, North Pole, delta Junction, etc., just tap the Weather app in your phone, and search for these places above. It was -40º degrees F. (same as -40º C) at 8:20 PM in Fairbanks (near the airport), and supposed to drop to -45º by 3:00 AM Sunday. The forecast calls for -45º in North Pole by 4:00 AM or so.

I keep checking on the Wunderground app. I kind of want to experience -40 but don’t want to at the same time. When it warms up to 0, folks in Fairbanks will probably be wearing shorts. Here near Minneapolis the coldest I think we have experienced was -25, but not every year. This winter has been balmy. We had one cold week in the single digits and teens (above) but some of those days were windy. More rain than snow and 40s above next week.

I want to complain that it was -17f at my house in Anchorage yesterday morning but then I think about Fairbanks.

Last and this winter have been relatively warm compared to winters of a few years ago when -45º and much colder used to last for a long time. I remember -65º lasting over a week back in the late '80s and early '90s.
As far as I remember we haven't had a Halloween night colder than -20 degrees for the past two or three years. Two weeks ago when the lower-48 States were experiencing a cold front, we had temperatures in the +20º degrees.

The cold temperatures started about Friday, maybe Saturday last week, and maybe it won't drop colder than -30 degrees this week. The Weather app in my iPhone shows -23º at 10:00 PM, and maybe -32º by 10:00 AM Wednesday. These are day temperatures. It may get in the low -40s at night from Wednesday through Saturday, unless it gets cloudy and starts snowing.

Much warmer by Anchorage and Juneau

When stationed in Elmendorf, and then lived off-base in the late '70's and early '80s I remember having much colder weather than it is these days. The problem was the slush and slippery roads. But at least no salt brine was used like it is today. The road crews create a very ugly mess as they spray a salt brine on the roads around Fairbanks.

I believe that it dropped to -45 at the airport thermometer, and about the same at the Badger thermometer in North Pole. I am glad that tonight may be a little warmer, maybe somewhere in the minus 30s, then a little warmer. Hopefully the cold front is just ending.

I forgot to add that The Yukon Quest stated today, but unlike other times I didn't want to wear the heavy winter outfit to take photos of the dogs and mushers, and stayed home "nice and warm" in front of the TV. If the day temperatures aren't colder than -30 degrees, I plan to attend the North Pole Championships (a sled dog and skijoring event by the end of this month), and take some photos.
