understanding of why some people (who enter the education forums to tell us we are the grammar nazis) would be so adamant re: defending poor spelling, language or grammar. let's say i was visiting weyauwega, wi and i mispronounced it and a local corrected me, my reaction would be to chuckle with embarrassment and then thank them for correcting me because i would rather be corrected than walk around for eternity looking like a fool! is it possible (maybe) that the people who refuse to understand why anyone would care about language is actually embarrassed but it turns into anger (somehow) towards those of us who care? OR do they just not care? OR do they suffer from low self esteem and think that they just arent capable of learning? I CANNOT figure this out!

next question: i spoke with my sis-in-law over the phone and she said "useded" roughly 4x within 5 mins. "oh, he's useded to it" "that's because i'm useded to it" etc etc. i did not correct her btw. my question is: how in the HECK does this happen that a person (who graduated high school!!) can even think that it's o.k. to say "useded"? she speaks horribly all around but "USEDED"? how does a brain even think to use such a word?
p.s. she will be coming over to my house on xmas eve and im wondering if i should correct her at all and by which method.

I think it is different on a message board b/c it has come to be accepted that people don't have to follow the rules. So people get up in arms when they are corrected. I generally follow grammar rules, but I would get irritated if my posts were picked apart all the time. As long as the post is readable, I say don't worry about it. When the post gets hard to read b/c of poor grammar, spelling, etc... it may be time to speak up.

Ok nicolepsy, I understand the need for proper grammar and I agree that it is important. Bad grammar can drive me nuts too. "Useded"? That is crazy.

However, I think if you're going to criticize you should at least use proper capitalization. You don't need to make it a habit... just use proper capitalization in your grammar nazi posts. The shift key should be right next to your left pinkie finger and is very easy to hit.

Happy holidays!

I wouldn't correct her on Christmas Eve. My mother corrected my sister-in-law when she said "where's it at?". It almost started a family feud. We still make jokes about never correcting someones grammar. It could all go terribly wrong.. ha ha.

are you serious? do you know how many grammar mistakes you made in your post? were they intentional? i sure hope so. i can help you revise it if you need me too.

to answer your first question i would say that the reason people will defend using poor spelling and poor grammar on an internet forum is the same reason you defend yourself in not capitalizing anything. its casual. we are not publishing anything. ill agree that if it gets to the point where its not understandable it will loose its point in being posted, but if it can be understood its fine.

to your second question i would say that she just developed a sort of slang word. though annoying im sure, i doubt sincerely that she thinks useded is the correct word. if she does i feel sorry that you were married into such a stupid family. just say stop that. thats annoying. if she just lacks intelligence and thinks useded is correct just lead by example. say i used that, or i used this. also you could act confused and ask her to repeat it until she gets it. i wouldn't blatantly say its USED. you are dumb! that would be mean

anyone that says someone who missed the space in alot is uneducated needs to be slapped. if i could i would ALOT.
show me some intelligence and ill show you an education.

there's lots of good ideas there for correction of my idiot sis-in-law. thanks bunches! (but where did i use many grammar mistakes in my posts?) (i still think there's a big big diff in not capitalizing versus horrible spelling and double negatives).

I suppose what annoys one person doesn't annoy the next, that's really what it comes down to. Blatant butchering of the English language does amuse and often irritate me, though. "Useded" is pretty funny, but it's repeated use in a conversation would have me biting my tongue off in an effort not to say anything.

My dh and I laugh privately together over other people's grammar mistakes, I suppose it helps to keep us from losing friends and family members by speaking out. LOL So instead of correcting people, we just laugh about it privately. Some of our personal favorites we've heard over the years that really amuse us:

"Rurnt" ("ruined"- my step-mother says that)
"Tarred" ("tired"- again from my step-mother)
"Grounded down" ("ground down"- our neighbor who is a school speech therapist said that twice to me in a conversation recently describing her dog's teeth, which are "grounded down" from chewing rocks)
"all intense purposes" ("all intents and purposes", but many people are unaware of it)
"old timer disease" ( alzheimer's disease", but again many are unaware of the true pronunciation)
"lookit" ("look at this", but many people string it together as one word, one of my dd's teachers used to say it regularly)
"stupider" ("more stupid" I suppose, again, one of my dd's teachers said that and all I could do was gape)

Really, I wouldn't correct her if I were you, I doubt she would take kindly to it. It was amusing to me, though!

well there were a couple times you missed a word or phrase, and through out the whole post your sentence structure was terrible. you used no double negatives but at times you used confusing wording, and once, i believe, you used "people is" . i don't mean to critique you its just if you want to talk about how bad peoples grammar is and how much it bothers you you might want to make sure everything you say is perfect. "sis" is the same thing as useded but useded is a lot more painful i agree.
