What is it? Is it really a dog, a fox, or small wolf? If it's a dog, was it ever domesticated and then released or has it always been wild?

It looks like a hybrid dog/fox, and also a little wolf.

genetically its none...its a cuon rather than a canis...a completly seperate family all together and probably an early evolutionary ancestorial offshoot
It has more teeth than any of the canis family
personally i think there an early offshoot of the jackle family, they do look like and are a similar size of a jackle, just REALY fuzzy lol
beautiful animals but very endangered

Can it breed with a dog or a fox and produce offsprings?

no it cannot cross breed with dog, wolf or fox, its a completly unrelated species and the genetics dont "match up" to produce viable offspring liek a wolf x dog or dog x coyotie would.

Are you sure?

I am very surprised by this response as they look just like a cayoty.

just because they LOOK like a yote (and personally i think they look more like red fox than yotes) doesnt mean they are...

they are a completly different subspecies, technically not even actually considered canine, and cannot produce viable offspring with Canine species...
they are offically a member of the Dog family, however its very unlikely these animals played any part in canine evolution, just like the fox, they shot off to a different branch

unlike the domeasic dog (Canis familiaris), wolf (Canis Lupus), coyote (Canis latrans), jackal (Canis aureus) (common), and dingo (Canis lupus dingo)...

the dohles scientific grouping is Cuon alpinus
Just like the fox (vulpes vulpes) hyena (cracutas cracutas) (striped) and african wild dog (Lycaon pictus)
none of these specias can interbreed with the CANIS group of canines due to taking a different direction on the evolutionary chain.

A wolf can mate with a domestic dog and produce offspring...
a Fox however cannot
same goes for a wolf mating with a coyote, they can produce viable offspring
however a coyote couldnt breed and produe viable offspring with a fox...

they are all "dogs" but not all "canines"

So, all of the above can breed with each other, but NOT with a dhole or a fox? Right?

Can a dhole and a fox breed with each other?

correct

but no a dhole and fox cannot interbreed as they are also seperate groups...(just liek a fox cant breed with a hyena ect...)

as the "wolf" evolved it split in so many directions that only a small number stayed on one line, and so many others kind of shot off randomly to the side lol.
