We were paying $4500 a year in Redford. Not sure if it is remotely possible to get one's money worth at that cost.

Yes, that's up there. I'm currently a renter looking to purchase. It concerns me to buy somewhere with more than $3000 in PT, because if that's where it is NOW what will it GO to? That would really turn me off as 1st time buyer...$4500

PT started out around 2900 or 3100 when we first moved it. THe SEV kept climbing and the taxes went out of sight. My parents have a house in Taylor and pay almost $5000 and they have owned it for 25 years.

I am new to learning how property tax is calculated, etc. but what I've noticed with online window shopping in almost every city, is it going to depend on that square footage, biggest factor. And also noticed the millage rates are different in the same city based on what school district the house sits in. So I've seen PT from $2400-$7500 all within the same exact city.

I think the member was talking about years ago when they lived in Redford, when home prices were higher. It still seems a bit high for Redford though, even when home prices were higher years ago.

Wayne County tends to have higher property taxes. Macomb's county rate last I heard was the cheapest in the state. Mine in Harrison Township at a bit less than $1300 are so cheap I don't know how they stay in business, considering that at least a third of the township is off the tax rolls (Selfridge Base and Metro Beach). I don't know how services are as I seldom venture into the township (I live near the township line), but the library is pitiful (but improving) and has no privileges with other libraries. The sheriff's department seems okay, and they're never far away as the nearby apartments aren't that good. My SEV is somewhere around $40K and the township has been good about lowering it- I haven't had to fight it like some have to do in other cities.

My sister lives in Cassopolis & pays $1800 / year

Very low crime / social services, she's quite happy with the value.

1800 sq foot home I think.
