We are looking to retire in central texas (originally from San Antonio) and looking DFW area. Hubby (originally from San Anton) will be working a few more years in upper management of commercial/industrial construction before retiring. I have been studying maps, and internet sites like this one and have real estate agents hooking me up on MIL's. I still can't find enough to make a decision. we are coming from California...(please don't hold that against us!).

Basically, I am looking for housing $200k-ish, no kids so no school issues, driving an hour or less to work, low property taxes, no HOA, and within 15-20 (but no fixer uppers!) year old home on the outskirts with maybe ½ acre. I hate the humidity and heat but know that comes with the territory but still...if there is an area that has less I am interested! We will probably be getting a 35' travel trailer to live in until we can find work/home. Hopefully a job and a home near each other! We could even go south of FW and he could work in dallas or austin.

1. I'll take any suggestions or thoughts about a good town to buy in. Outskirts of the metropolis.

2. I need GOOD RV parks...for long term parking....3-6 months so we have time to find a home. I got AAA and they don't have anything about much in the way of RV parks in this area...are there any? I would like to think that between DFW there would surely be a couple nice ones...full hookups etc.
Any suggestions? Thanks for any suggestions

I would suggest reposting this on one of the other Texas fora. DFW is nowhere near central TX and our ability to help you will be quite limited.

Can't be found. Add 100k to your budget, and maybe you'll be able to find something on the outskirts.

This is TX, not New Jersey. It's a 3.5 hr drive at best between Dallas and Austin.

Can't help you on RV parks but you're mostly looking for a unicorn:

1. Almost all new homes in last 15-20 years will be in HOA areas.

2. Depending on where your jobs are, 1 hour commute can be from a dense suburb to downtown, or from one dense suburb to another. Your job location will drive the where to live decision.

3. You can't live "south of Forth Worth" and expect to split the commute between Austin and Dallas. From downtown to downtown, they are about 3.5-4 hours apart in traffic. You could reasonably split the commute to Waco but not much further than that.

4. Low property taxes : wrong state. Expect to pay in the ballpark of $4,000 per year for your $200k home.

5. Putting aside your job location and desired age of home, some areas that *might* work are:

south of Dallas - look from Ennis north to DeSoto/ Duncanville.

north of Frisco - look from Sherman and Denton south to Anna/ Celina

Check in Fate and Royse City, east of Dallas. We bought a 10 year old home in Fate on 1/2 acre, 2 years ago - 2400 SF, for $200,000. Now it should sell for around $240K but there are smaller homes in our neighborhood for around $200K. No HOA. But yes, taxes are high in Texas.

You might want to look around Pilot Point/Aubrey. Maybe even around the Denton area. Celina and Prosper (and even Gunter) are probably out of your price range. The homes will probably be older though. That will put you decently close to Frisco/Prosper. There are are tons of developments going in along 380/Preston and all through Frisco.

Try southern Oklahoma near Durant. Much less expensive prices and taxes as well as a fast growing town due to Choctaw casino and proximity to dallas. Several big constructions projects now and more to come

Corinth, TX will be about the only place I think you can find one at those specs at that price, but they sell F A S T !

a half-acre of land alone within an hour of the metroplex is gonna run 100k+, so don't expect much of a 'house' ....
