I am considering relocating to the Columbia/Lexington area from mid-state Michigan. I am married with 3 children. I work for a state psychiatric hospital here in Michigan, but my wife and I are both currently working toward our degrees in education. We are hoping to find a small, quiet town and prefer rural living. I am wondering if this is a good area as far as schools/employment/crime rate is concerned. I am ok with a 30-45 min commute, but most important is affordable homes to rent, and low crime. I'm tired of having to carry a firearm, and my children growing up in community that isn't safe. My wife is crazy about the Lexington area, and I am excited for a change. Im just looking for some feedback to see what people from these areas think. We are quiet family people, so nightlife/malls are not important...quiet country living close to employment is what we are looking for!

It sounds like Gilbert has y'all's names written all over it, or rural/suburban Lexington County around Red Bank.
