The only cities in America that Michelin comes to because of the dining scene without being paid are NYC, DC, Chicago, and San Francisco I believe. They join cities around the world that also have Michelin because of their dining scene like Paris, London, and Tokyo etc.
I did a bit of research when I found out the Philadelphia metro was getting a guide. There's two guides: green and red. Red is the more exclusive traditional dining guide. Green is a general travel guide.
Philadelphia's green guide is out already in France, but comes out in English in a few weeks. It calls Philadelphia the 'most French city in America' which I thought was funny because most people couldn't tell you where the designated French-Quarter is in Philadelphia. It will be interesting to see if restaurants get added next year

It will be interesting to see how many restaurants get stars in Philadelphia. We will have updates on all cities in the coming months. I’m interested to see how much closer DC gets to San Francisco in stars. Last year, DC (23 restaurants) was 5 restaurants behind San Francisco (28 restaurants) within city limits.
I am still so pleased that Addison in San Diego earned 3-stars in the last edition! Would love to see Las Vegas get another edition-why not combine NV and CA?

Speaking of affordable, I ate at a World’s Best 50 Restaurant and a 2 star Michelin, D.O.M., in São Paulo last month. While dinner runs around $140 US with no drinks or tip I had their multi course Executive Lunch special offered weekdays for a ridiculously low $20 US. No way they’re making money on this and it was a great meal. Total bill came to $47 with tip, cocktail, dessert and bottle of water not part of the deal.

Nice! The labor costs are so different in other countries. Michelin announces restaurants twice a year now, but the first announcements for DC proper included 8 additional restaurants within city limits. We don’t know which ones will receive stars and which ones will be Bib Gourmand though.
Whichever way the ratings go, DC will probably surpass 40 Bib Gourmand restaurants within city limits and probably pass 25 restaurants with stars within city limits.

So is Philadelphia getting a restaurant guide as well? ISTR Philadelphia has had a Michelin Green Guide for several years now.
The "French Quarter" in Philadelphia, IIRC, is centered on the intersection of 17th and Sansom streets, where one finds the Sofitel hotel. Air France also operates Le Meridien hotel in the former YMCA in the 1400 block of Arch Street, opposite the Municipal Services Building.
I've also heard this city called "the most French city in America."
Edited to add: Even after the Michelin Guide to Philadelphia restaurants appears, I stand by my prior comments about ranking US cities by Michelin-starred restaurants, namely, that too few cities have restaurants inspected by Michelin to make it a really meaningful comparison of American cities.

I stayed in that Sofitel once. A Comcast guy was hosting an IETF meeting in their conference rooms. Comcast paid for dinner for ~ 20 people at Morimoto. The bean counters at my company would have had a cow if I’d tried to submit a Morimoto dinner on my expense report.
Philly and Boston are similar. They were awful in 1970 for restaurant selection. 50 years later, they both have a pretty good dining scene but not to the level of NYC or the Bay Area. Those restaurants are fueled by expense report dining. There’s just more of that in NYC and the two major California population centers so it supports more high end dining.
