Considering how crazy last year was being one behind is a big surprise. But it has been freezing the last few days so it's not a complete surprise.

Has Philly ever had MORE homicides than Chicago?

Chicago went past 900 in the crack days and had over 700 in 2006. Philly as far as I’m concerned throughout history has always had below 600?

2021- 26
2020- 11
2019- 12
LAPD continues to update slowly in 2021. Usually they release updated totals every Tues. These numbers through 1/23 just came out today:

2021- 34 (8 more over a week)
2020- 20
2019- 15

I know it goes without saying but major Canadian cities are kicking ***** in the safety department. Toronto could end the first month with just 3 homicides. Ironically, one of them was an American, but for city of over 3 million it illustrates what can be achieved among big North American cities(especially for those in the 1m+ club). Maybe that 77% clearance rating will pay off this year. Montreal has 2, while Calgary is still sitting at zero.

In a month, yes, but not for a year (at least dating back to 1965). I don't know what Philly being on Chicago's toes currently means for the near future. In 2020, Philly kept up with Chicago during the first couple of months, then it all changed when the season got warmer. Chicago had a really bad May-July(80-110 killings per month) last year. It's scary that these cities are essentially experiencing spring season monthly murder this early.
