Could I get a general idea as to how much to expect to pay if the rental unit does not cover heating costs. Standard 1 bed roughly 700 sqft. Ive never paid for heat so im in the dark on this one...

It will depend a lot on the age of the building and, if it's an older building, how recently (if ever) the windows were replaced. If the answer to the first question is "older than 40 years" and the answer to the second question is "not very recently" then you can probably expect to pay up to $150-200 for your January and February heating bills. It will also depend on what kind of building you're in. If you're in a two- or three-flat with four walls and possibly the roof exposed to the outside, you'll pay more than if you're in a building with, say, 20 units and you've got units above, below and beside you.

I lived in a 2 BR condo years ago in the garden unit. around the time the bears made the superbowl in jan 2007, it was negative degrees. my apartment was like 600 sq ft, and the HIGHEST bill I ever paid was around $250.

I also lived in a 3BR 1800 sq ft house prior to now and when temps dropped to multiple negative degree days, I paid around $600 in the worst month for heat. yes, that cost was BRUTAL, but I had 7' windows all on the first floor, so that certainly didn't help.

I currently live in an approximately 600 sq ft 1 bedroom with the 2 long walls exposed to the outside and the 2 short walls sheltered by other apartments. The windows are fairly new. Not only do I pay for heat, but I also pay for hot water and cooking gas. My gas bills have been around $50/month. The most recent bill was $60. I don't keep the apartment all that warm, though. I love cooler temperatures and have been turning the heat off at night. The coldest it's gotten inside is 58 degrees. I turn it on to about 66 when I'm getting up and dressed and then down to about 60 when I go out.
