Why would anyone bother going to the far West Side when you've got Jim's Original and the Express Grill - the true originals, the establishments that invented and perfected the Maxwell Street Polish - on Union just south of Roosevelt?

And as far as the fries - they are much better today, they were always horrible on Maxwell Street. IIRC, Jim's didn't even give free fries until Express Grill started to and they were forced to in order to compete.

amen to that. i used to live right next to those stands in the UIC dorms. best drunk munchies EVER.

jims fries >>>> maxwells's fries
maxwell's sandwhiches (just slightly) > jims sandwhiches

You know what, I forget those places are there. I was at Home Depot on Clinton today, had a taste for a Polish and headed off towards Maxwell Station on 31st, wasn't even thinking about Jim's which was what, two blocks away?

As it turned out while going down Canal I stopped in at Lawrences for fried shrimp instead.

I used to hang out with Jim Stefanovich's kid back in the day. He said the only place that had the same Polish sausage as his dad was stand in Maywood at 1st and Madison. This was in, oh, 1968 or so.

I concur. The Maxwell Street Polish is not only a tasty snack - it is also one of the great drunk munchies of the world.

I may be totally off on this, but I have long suspected that it is the excruciatingly painful, scald-your-mouth till you scream sport peppers that give the Maxwell Street Polish its legendary anti-hangover capabilities.
