Hello All,
I recently transferred to UChicago from Rutgers University and am wondering where a safe place to live is? I’m aware of the on-campus housing apartments, but these are in the Woodlawn neighborhood, which has a reputation of being a dangerous area. I believe I’ll be safe here, since I’lll be on campus, but are there any safer apartments in better areas I could live in? Thanks!

The on-campus housing along 61st is essentially an extension of Hyde Park rather than being remotely similar in look or feel to Woodlawn's gang areas. Woodlawn occasionally cracks Chicago's top 15 most violent neighborhoods, towards the bottom these days when it does. I'd say the odds of something happening to you are slight given that you follow basic street sense practices if you spend time in Woodlawn. With the Obama Library beginning construction and the investments UChicago has made in the area there will be even more transformational projects to come. I'd say Woodlawn's trajectory is definitely upward with developers and the city having been keen on its redevelopment for decades now. Kenwood north of Hyde Park is a nice area with some diversity as well. Bronzeville is another area with a lot of gentrification/infill taking place and single-family-homes sales are setting new record highs year after year which is beginning to compete with certain North-Side neighborhoods. You should be able to find quite a lot of options depending on your situation.

The office of admissions has extensive information on crime and safety. I know this from when I toured and applied there almost ten years ago.

The housing resource page for grad students is a good place to start:
https://grad.uchicago.edu/life-at-uchicago/housing/

Do bear in mind that UChicago police supplement CPD patrols between 37th and 64th streets, not just in Hyde Park:
https://safety-security.uchicago.edu...s/patrol_maps/

However, campus buses (pretty useful in the depths of winter!) mostly run between 51st and 63rd streets, so you might want to focus your search near those:
