I would like to keep the car as we like to get away at least once a month to explore. We also have an 8 month old dog and its a lot easier to travel with her with a car. The car has about 9 months of payments left on it so I guess we could keep it until its all paid off and then decide if we need it or not.

I have seen a few really nice apartments around Bucktown and Wicker Park for about $1600 but without parking. How is the street parking situation in these areas?
It really depends in which parts of Bucktown and Wicker Park you live in. In some parts of those two neighborhoods, parking is not a problem, in other parts it would be a huge pain in the ass. So if you live in Bucktown near the North and Dame intersection it will be a pain in the ass. If you live more by Western and Armitage it will not be that bad.

Depends on the neighborhood - some of them like Lincoln Park, Lakeview, etc especially near the lake can be really hard to find a spot but you can get lucky. Other neighborhoods aren't as great. If you can find a place with a parking spot in the back or a ramp, it's better but beware you'll pay at least $100/month more for it for a simple outside spot and probably at least $175-$200/month more if it's in a ramp.

Thanks for the heads up.

After all the hassle we've had here in NYC with parking I think I would rather find a place where we can have our own spot. It really does make life that little bit easier. I find myself missing football because I need to move the car on Sunday before the spots are all taken haha.

I just saw a few condos near Old Irving Park with parking that were nice and updated. Then I noticed the commute downtown is around 40 minutes. Ideally I would like to keep that to around 30 minutes if possible. I know it sounds like im reaching though for parking and being close to downtown!

I'm just giving mu 2-cents... not a local for years and never lived near Downtown...

But sooooo much of Chicago has two-sided parking in EVERY NEIGHBORHOOD. A FULL alleyway system where many have garages. It should be far less a issue then NYC. I can see many NEW Apartment housing infill in like.... Wrigleyview section of Lakeview. With visible parking spots in backs in the Alleyway. Many neighboehoods ...GOOGLE STREETVIEW360°s even go through most Chicago alleyways.

Even fashionable Lincoln Park
https://www.google.com/maps/@41.9221...7i13312!8i6656 though streetview does not go down this alley. It is a example of Chicago's layout even in oldest neighborhoods and parking on both sides of streets.

Love these Older Victorians...

Older and newer infill here and then their alleys in Wrigleyville part Lakeview....

You see older Apartment courtyard buildings like this in Chicago by this block too. Chicago did not go Tenements

Lakeview too

Intersection love the old decorative buildings...

Old Irving Park

Its alleyway

Wicker Park

Its alleys show parking too...

OK GOT CARRIED AWAY.... BUT STREETVIEWS ARE GREAT TO CHECK OUT NEIGHBORHOODS.

Old Irving commute could easily be less than 40 minutes. Depending on where in Irving Park, there are two Metra lines and the Irving Park blue line. It's about 20-25 min to the loop on the blue line. I'd assume less on either of the Metra lines.

I should make a correction - I meant to say "not as bad" not "not as great" Anyway, where is your commute to?

I'm not completely familiar with the area but ill be working around N State St and E Lake St. It would be nice if the commute by public transposition is around 20-30 minutes.

I know I cant have everything but ideally i'd like to find a neighborhood that is 20-30 minutes from work, walkable but also with a parking spot and a one or two bedroom for $1400-1700!

Most of the places will have the option of renting a space. In the denser/closer neighborhoods like Lincoln park it's generally $150-$200/mo. If you go further out like Roscoe Village, then you can probably find a spot for under $100/mo

What is Logan Square like? There's a few apartments that are updated with also parking garages.

I just looked at the area on google maps and it doesn't look very walk-able as in lots of restaurant and bars to walk to. Or are there areas of Logan Square that are walk-able?

Logan Square is very walkable, there's loads of bars and eateries there, and it's cheaper than places like Lincoln Park and Wicker Park. Keep in mind you're coming from the most walkable, and most bar/restaurant dense city in America though, don't expect it to be like NYC. It's close though. About on par with DC or Toronto. As far as NY neighborhoods go, it would be on par with Ozone Park for walkability.

Here's all the neighborhoods by walk/public transport/bike score (scroll down a bit and click to open the full list)
