The lease on my apartment ends in May, but I'm starting to look at different neighborhoods now to get a feel for them to see where I want to live when my lease ends. I'll probably be looking for a 1 bedroom with a max. price tag of $700/month. I'm planning on attending UIC next year and may have a car (but I'd prefer not to). My main needs are affordability, safety, walking distance (2-4 blocks) to restaurants and bars (a variety of different types is preferred), and a significant number of younger people (mid-20s). The neighborhoods I'm thinking of are East Pilsen, East Village, Bridgeport, Logan Square, and Uptown. What areas do people suggest and are there specific intersections within those neighborhoods I should focus my search on. Additionally, most of my friends live on the north side (Lincoln Park, Lakeview, Wicker Park), so I'd like to stay somewhat close to them (I don't want to take 2 buses and a train to get to their apartment). With all this criteria, what do people suggest?

You can probably find something near Wicker Park for that price. One bdrm apt in Wicker Park, near blue line and Metra,$575 (broken link)
This one is on Western near Division posted now on Craigslist. Maybe when you're looking you can find something similar. That would make you close to friends in WP and LP and it would be a straight shot down Western to school.
