ok so i'm 15, and i'm trying to convince my mom that the "crowd isn't too rough." let me give you some background information: i've seen all time low, handguns, man overboard, i'm going to warped this summer with intentions of seeing of mice and men, motionless in white, falling in reverse, ice nine kills, etc. can anyone give me any information on about how rough it can get at riot fest? the bands i want to see bring me the horizon, of mice and men, we came as romans, and a few others like that.

I saw the misfits and anthrax when I was 12 or 13. That was an eye opening crowd, but I was fine. The riotfest crowd will be fine, probably more married 30 somethings who are excited to see a lineup where they recognize the bands and don't have to deal with drugged out edm kids at lollapalooza.

Meh - the crowd at riot fest isn't any different than any other half way major music fest that attracts the same music. Think about it logically like this - how many thousands of people have gone to Riot Fest and what percentage of people have run into serious trouble? Barely any. As long as you aren't doing massive amounts of drugs or alcohol and you aren't sticking your nose in other peoples' business when you shouldn't then you should be fine.

The bigger concern is you randomly walking like a mile west of Humboldt Park instead of what happens at the actual festival.

It's not a rough crowd at all, it's very safe, my only comment is the same as marothisu - DO NOT under any circumstances leave the Riot Fest areas. The area where the bands play is fenced off, enclosed. When travelling into and out of the actual fest, you will be surrounded by 100's (if not 1000's) of other people getting to and leaving the fest, stay with that crowd at all times, there's safety in numbers. Don't wander into the hood - just go in , have fun, and at the end of the night leave.

I know it's a three-day festival and there are many bands from various eras, so it's hard to know what the crowd will be at any specific time. I saw the Cure at the World Music Amphitheater about fifteen years ago, and the crowd then was pretty geriatric even back then. Some of their fans have to be as old/older than your parents.

No it isn't hard to know, as a veteran of fests, the crowds are always the same, rich suburban kids and hip yuppies, they're very white and have money. The entry fees are like $100/day, food, drinks, it's not cheap. I've been to dozens of fests, the crowds arrive at noon-3 and stay til 10, if you leave you are not allowed back in, nobody leaves unless theyre going home.

I was there all three days last year. The crowd was anything but "rough." It was very family-friendly, and because there were so many bands from the 80's and 90's playing (as there are again this year), the crowds were full of older, tame people. (I'm in my 30's and didn't even feel remotely out of place. There were people my age and older everywhere, and we don't tend to be the population who starts trouble at concerts.) If I were the parent of a 15-year-old, I'd probably be more concerned about them going to Lolla than Riot Fest.

I will say, however, that Humboldt Park is not a place you want to go wandering around alone at night. When the festival is over, stay with the crowd as you exit, until you get into a bus or car. Edit: I just realized others beat me to this point. They're correct.

Your overall point stands, though.
