Chicago just doesn't have the density to have the delivery culture New York (especially Manhattan) offers. There are a few late-night delivery places here, and I'd expect the numbers to slowly rise in areas that are allowed to densify, but for better and for worse, it's just not Manhattan.

Sure, I agree that Manhattan has a lot, but my main point is more of the fact that while yes there could be areas like this even in high rent areas of Manhattan (and really there are good ethnic restaurants around the core of Chicago if you know your stuff), in a lot of cities there's more ethnic restaurants in the ethnic enclaves or away from the high rent areas due to the fact that some people cannot afford those rents period. Some can, sure, but many can't so they exist elsewhere (amongst other reasons)

Eggsperience Cafe is open all night on weekends. Rockit is open until 1-3am depending on the night. There's a 24-hour Taco Burrito King on Chicago. Green Door is open until 2am. Moe's Cantina is open to 2-3am. Some of those places are more tavern-like. Maybe they're not open late enough for you. But they're all open past midnight and have better food than McDonald's. If I were to list those places that stayed open until midnight, the list would be longer.

I'm not saying there's New York level of options, but it's certainly more than just McDonald's.
Yep. J's Dawg is open til 2am and 5am on weekends. There's a handful of places on Division Street that are either 24 hours or open until 4am or 5am most everyday (i.e. Five Faces and even Jimmy John's). State Street Pizza is open until 2am on weekends, Al's Beef is actually open until 3am on weekends, Mr. Beef is open until 5am on weekends in River North, Ay Chiwowa is open until 4am/5am everyday, Rosati's is open until 2am everyday and 4am on weekends.. The Subway in the Gold Coast near Viagra Triangle is actually open until 5am on weekends too as is the one near North & Wells. The one near Ohio & State is open til 1am on weekends

Exactly. Wanting a variety of authentic ethnic food in River North is like wanting a variety of authentic ethnic food in Times Square. Wrong neighborhood, dude.

The OP is correct that Chicago doesn't have the late-late-night food delivery culture that NYC has. I have to say I've never understood the point of that, though. If I want food at midnight and am too lazy to walk down the street, I'm probably better off not eating, let alone being picky about it.

Right. The other week someone asked me for it, so I mined some GrubHub data on a Monday night and I had about 55 places that could deliver to my place at or after midnight in Gold Coast. I mean, not like NYC but still you have options. I can easily get a pizza delivered to my place at 3am any night of the week still.

Lots of places in Chinatown are open late.
San Soo Gab San Korean food on North Western is open until 3
Kimberli's Sushi on Lawrence open until 3 or 4
Garcia's Mexican Restaurant open until 1 on weekdays 3 and 4 on weekends
There are a few Indian restaurants on Devon/Western open until 12AM.
Pita Kabab (middle eastern) in West Roger's Park open until 2AM
Several pizza places open late/very late
White Castle; Taco Burrito King, IHOP, open 24-7
I think that covers at least a handful of open-late areas of the world all nestled within Chicago. At 2 in the morning, there is no traffic. Take a drive.

They are all over the place and if you go back a few pages, you'll see a map I'm making. I just began mining data for the food places open past midnight at least once a week. There's a lot in the city and I'm not even close to done with it.

Chicago has plenty of great ethnic foods. Depending on where you live, you may have to venture out of your neighborhood to get it. Chicago is a big place.

I ate plenty of great Chinese, Indian and Greek food in Chicago. I lived on the far south side and I had no issue with taking CTA out of my neighborhood to go all the way to Devon Ave. to have good Indian food. It was a long ride but worth it to me. That was always an exciting trip for me.

What a horrible comparison (Rivernorth/times square), I live in west village and can't get basically any ethnic cuisine delivered to my place at all hours. When I lived in Chicago, my biggest complaint was the lack of good ethnic options in my surrounding neighborhood (gold coast), this is most definitely not the case in virtually all of manhattan.

If you're in NYC's West Village, did you mean to say that you CAN get any ethnic cuisine delivered at any hour? I think you accidentally stated that you "CAN'T" do so.

And to add to our response to "nearnorth", gotta remember that Midtown Manhattan has plenty of other neighborhoods such as Chelsea, the Meatpacking District, Murray Hill, Hells Kitchen, etc. You can get delivery to virtually anywhere in the island below Harlem.
