the time has come for my son to start to travel to places for his volunteer work and one of the places is a bit far to say the least. I don't know if he will get this one but it is at 2424 W.Touhy Ave. My Son lives at Roosevelt and S. Michigan area. I did a google search and it is kinda far let alone how to get there. Any suggestions on time and type of transportation he will have to take?
Also I did a crime search for the area and it looks ok as far as safety goes is that right?

The neighborhood is fine. Any particular reason why he would have to travel to THAT ymca?

It'd be a journey. The CTA trip planner calls it at least an hour on 3 buses.

it is to work with the KEEN kids that are in that area. One hour is not bad I guess..it would be on his day off but I think that would eat up his whole day. It will be for Grant writing and Fundraising so maybe he can do some of that from his place but I also know he wants to work with the kids.

That's High Ridge Y
I think the red line el to a westbound bus would be the fastest way.
According the the CTA map online, He could get off the Red Line at Howard and take a #290 bus west and south back to Touhy & Western. I don't know if that route would be affected by any service cuts, though.

Better yet, take a Purple Line train if it's during rush hour (it skips 12 stops that the Red Line stops at), and then take the Howard CTA bus or the Rogers/Touhy PACE bus to Western.

The Red Line does, as does the 97 CTA bus that connects to the Howard Red/Purple/Yellow Line stop and will drop him off at Howard and Western, which is a 10-minute walk from Touhy/Western.

All this said, does he have a car? There should be plenty of street parking on Western Avenue and probably on Touhy as well on a Sunday, and he wouldn't have to feed a meter.

no he doesn't have a car with him there. Are those rentals you rent for a day expensive? He has a place right by him on Roosevelt. Plus he has never driven in Chicago traffic....OH are there cabs around there for that small ride?

Getting a cab up there on a Sunday may not be a problem, though I'm not completely sure. At any rate, getting a cab back will be trickier. As for the iGo and ZipCar programs, they never struck me as particularly economical but I supose their numerous customers disagree. It might be something for him to look into.
