Hello - moving to the area from Texas and was hoping to find some lake front property in the Lake County area.

Any thoughts of a relatively newer home with a quiet community? (I have been up to the Chain O Lakes and that is way too active/crazy)

If you mean Lake Michigan expect to pay a lot. The communities in Lake County bordering Lake Michigan range from really expensive (Highland Park, Lake Forest, Lake Bluff), to mid range (Winthrop Harbor).

Lake Forest and Lake Bluff are really quiet, but they are some of the wealthiest suburbs.

If you mean Chain O Lakes, it is pretty inexpensive, but also like you said, active, and loud and you don't have the best quality people out there.

Winthrop Harbor might be ok, it is the northeastern end of Lake County. Avoid Beach Park.

Might be possible to find something in Mundelien -- Diamond Lake is not on the chain...

How much you can and are willing to spend matters.

What does lakefront mean to you, matters.

Where you work and how long a commute matters.

Schools may matter.

Proximity to shopping, restaurants and entertainment may matter.

You didn't specify what type of home - but there are some lovely town home condos in Lake Barrington Shores in Lake Barrington that are lovely and quiet. Also in Barrington you have the subdivision Fox Point and some of those homes are on the lake - people are really dropping their prices in there.

It all comes down to price range, that will dictate everything! Crystal Lake is not the same as Lake Barrington, and they're both completely different from Lake Michigan, which will run you over a million to be on the lake.

I have lived in Grayslake (and on Grays Lake) for the past 12 years. Grayslake has a beautiful Heritage area with lots of rehabbed Victorians and older homes; cute downtown you can walk to if you live in the Heritage area. Two high schools, one your kids can walk to easily within the Heritage area. It's surrounded by busy Lake County but there are lots of forest preserves, places to board horses. Still some rural feel here, e.g., farmers market is good; the Lake County Fairgrounds just moved to new location and is very close. You can easily drive to the Chain if you want to use motorboats, but there are no motors allowed on Grays Lake--it's perfect, though, for sailing or fishing. Lakefront property here is scarce but does come up from time to time. I would be glad to answer any other questions you might have about the area. I am not a realtor but can recommend my neighbor who is and who has lived here forever.
