My husband and I just moved to the area and notice that on some days the air smells like mildew. What is causing that?

Are you close to the river?

I don't know where you are living but parts of the Fox River are pretty swampy.

This may be too much of an obvious statement....but...... I find that a mildew smell is present when people have lots of leaves piled up waiting to be collected. In my area we sweep them to the street and the city sucks them up. Many of them are wet and moldy and therefore there is a temporary smell. Just a thought. I've never noticed anything in Batavia before however.

Its a new smell to me, too, and Ive lived here almost my whole life. I only smell it in the St. Charles/Geneva area, and its STRONG!!! As another poster stated, it might just be rotting piles of leaves, thats all I can think of. Not sure why I havent smelled it before, but its pretty bad! Whats weird is that its only in small, select spots.

I smelled a pungent stench in Barrington and Fox River Grove the other day. Its due to leaf burning and molding leaves...at first I thought there was something wrong with my car.
