My fiance and I are moving to Chicago. I want to live in Chicago, but he wants the burbs. Somebody in his office is leasing a house in Lombard that he wants to look at. Tell me about Lombard-what's it like, etc? It looks so far from Chicago on a map, but the Metra ride doesn't look too bad.

I've lived in Lombard all my life. It's a great town, with the train commute about 20 minutes and the ride to Chicago around 35 minutes.

Lombard
Lombard is nice, I think its near the mall in st. charles (also nice place). Its not too far away from Chicago, just far west. Schools are good I think try realtor.com they have lots of facts. Good choice though.

Hello - We live in Arizona and are thinking about moving back to the Chicago area. We have decided if we move back, we will buy in Lombard, as it is in a 15 minute radius of many of our family/friends who live in more expensive suburbs nearby, which we cannot afford. Lombard is nice and has a beautiful park system. The community also gets some tax revenues from retail areas such as the Yorktown Mall, so that helps keep the residential taxes down a bit. The Prairie Path, which is a walking or biking trail along an old railroad roadway, goes right through town and is wonderful. Saturday nights there is a classic car cruise in downtown Lombard and it is a great place to take the kids. We are baby boomers, so if we buy, it will be downtown so we can walk to library, train, church, and parks. I like the old town section with the narrower streets and old-fashioned streetlights. It sounds perfectly fine, but what about for a 30 year old woman engaged to a 41 year old man...we have no kids (none in the near future either)...is there anything nearby that would appeal? We aren't party animals but like the occasional nice dinner out, live music show, nightlife, on occasion. And y'all mentioned shopping...tell me about that?

Lombard is not too bad, but it could use some improvement. Its NOT close to the mall in St. Charles, like one poster noted, and with bad traffic off of 38, it could take a good 45 minutes to get to St. Charles actually. LOL Anyways, you should look at Warrenville, which isnt terribly far, or Wheaton, which is even closer. Those towns are quite pricey, but there are nice areas with lower prices, you just have to find them.

I don't live there but grew up around there and have relatives there. Good suburb. Not too "high end" and snooty. And very convenient location, not too bad to get downtown from there either.. Most people my age who grew up in Elmhurst, live there now since Elmhurst is way to expensive currently with all the teardown mania.
