Naperville. Because of its size, it has a broaden spectrum in housing prices. You can also save a little by living in the area that shares the school district with Aurora. Schools aren't as good as Naperville but they're decent. Amenities are nice and there's plenty of shopping.

What do you consider middle class (in terms of housing price), what area of Chicagoland are you thinking (need to be a certain distance from the city or somewhere else?), and how much house do you need? Chicagoland is huge so helps to narrow it down. "Middle class" budget may buy a small house in a suburb 30 minutes from the city, or a much larger house in a suburb an hour and 15 minutes from the city.

The average home value around here is about like upper 100k to lower 200k. But I'm referring to suburbs where you can get a 3000 sq ft house for around 400k-500k.

Are you actually looking for a town to move to or are you just curious? If it's the 1st, you have to give more info, starting with where do you work?

Stay in the north and northwest region. The most jobs are there. If you can get a town with a train in to downtown, that is best.

Which suburbs North and Northwest have the best schools within my price range? I like Crystal Lake and Gurnee. Any info about the schools and the towns themselves? Any other suburb recommendations?

I recently attempted to buy in that area..we must have wildly differing opinions of "broad spectrum". I couldn't find anything with 3br for under 340k, and that was basically in the sticks.

If you're getting Aurora schools, might as well LIVE in Aurora and get lower taxes and more affordable housing.
