I am looking for recommendations on an effective way to find a nanny for before/after school care of a 1st and 3rd grader. I live in the far western suburb of Oswego and (unfortunately) take the Metra to work in Chicago. I would be looking for someone to arrive at either my or my ex-wife’s house (also in Oswego, we each have kids 50% of the time) at around 6:25 and be there when the kids wake up, get them fed and dropped off at school at 8:20, and then again pick them up at school at 3:35 and be with them until I got home at 5:25. The days at my ex's home would be a 7AM start and same after school hours.

The district has before/after school care available, but I would have to drop the kids off at something like 6:20 or so to be able to make a train, which means getting them up earlier, etc. Obviously we’d prefer the kids to be able to spend more of that time in the home so their day would not seem nearly as long and they'd have a chance to play with friends there, etc.

Anyone have any ideas? I thought about posting something on Craigslist but I am afraid I’d be deluged with responses. Ideally we can find a college student or recent grad who is interested in working 4 hours or so per day.

I think what you are planning will be difficult. Maybe you will find someone reliable but methinks that with illness, bad weather, and just people asking for days off you are going to have problems. The best route is some of the before and after programs where you drop your kids off. I had to use them for years. They are always there, always open. Good luck hopefully you will find something workable.

I have the same set up that you are looking for and I found my nanny on Care.com. She comes in the morning around 7 does the morning routine and drops off at school. Then she comes back to pick up and watch them until we get home.

The great thing about this situation is that the kids get to come home like the other kids and are able to participate in after school activities or just hang out with friends. When we used the after school progam (besides being way more expensive) my kids just felt like they were at school for 10 hours and didn't get to be "like their friends". It was difficult to build friendships when they could only play on the weekends.

It takes a lot of sifting through applications to find the right person but they are out there. A lot of them like this schedule because it allows them to take classes during the day or even have another part time job.

Good luck!
