I am possible moving to the area to take at job at a university in Hammond, IN. Are there any good suburbs south of the city that would be good to take a look at? i am looking for something that is, first and foremost, safe! I am looking to rent, and would be willing to spend up to $1,600/month until we get the lay of the land. We don't have any kids yet, but a good school district wouldn't hurt either. I don't mind commuting, but would really like to keep it under 35-45 minutes. Any guidance would be greatly appreciated! Thanks so much!!!

Default Many good suburbs south of Chicago

Yes..Flossmoor,Homewood,Oak Forest, Orland Park, and Orland Hills are all GREAT suburbs. Great shopping, great school districts, and awesome park districts. All of the cities I listed have a BUNCH of apartment complexes, some taking up a whole city block. Now what kind of commuting do you plan on doing? Driving? or public trans?

If your planning on driving, traffic out here in the south burbs are pretty during 6AM-8AM. The only traffic you'd probably hit is a convoy of 20 school buses dropping some kids off at school. If your planning on public trans..Your kinda out of luck, unless your willing to hop on:

A metra electric train to 57,56th,55th street(Hyde Park), then wait for South Shore train to take you to Indiana. Which would be stressful as hell..

Anyway,
