Hi we live in a choice area in highland park and can send our child to either deerfield or highland park high school next year. Our son has little interest in sport clubs but is an expert in martial arts and is possible the brightest kid (certainly top 3) in his class with no child having a more difficult course load.

One obvious negative which he doesn't seem to think is a negative is that if he goes to deerfield he will be starting over with new kids. Does anyone have any insight into either highschool that could help us?

Same school district. Roughly the same population of students. Approximately equal economic wealth between each. Other than that, maybe call the district and ask.

I think you may have answered your own question. I would talk more about if starting over with new kids is good or bad for him. He will have kids from other middle schools mixing in with his class at HP, right? Have you compared class offerings, clubs and elective courses offered between both schools to see how that fits your son's interests? You truly have a win-win choice.
Another factor is transportation to and from school. Is one closer making it easier for you to drop off early or pick up late if there are no buses?

Maybe go tour both and see which one "feels" right to him?

HPHS definitely has more of a reputation for drug problems than DHS.

Both serve affluent areas with the same district. HPHS though has much more of an economic spread than DHS. HPHS goes from much higher income than Deerfield to much lower, especially from Highwood and some of the far northern parts of Highland Park.

I think HPHS and DHS and a lot like GBN and GBS....districts with two high schools, both with excellent reputations.

I have also heard the HPHS drug use is high (no pun intended!).
