Do freight trains run on the Union Pacific North tracks near downtown Lake Bluff? I know they run next to 41 and see that the track cuts over. Just trying to figure out whether they come through town.

Thanks!

This page seems to indicate that, no, they do not, and that all the freight activity is north of the junction that cohdane is mentioning (I feel like I've posted this before):

Without wanting to get my geek on, isn't that red line joining the green one at Lake Bluff indicating another line joins the UPN? I've been at Lake Bluff station before and seen a freight train pass through from the track that joins it at the station. It was a short train but still. You will also see the freight 'locomotive' sat on that little stretch most mornings. If I recall correctly, the freight tracks are separate to the Metra ones but they do run through Lake Bluff Metra station.

Yes there are freight trains use the UP track which runs parallel to the Metra tracks at the station. It is a short spur which brings supplies to Great Lakes and the Abbott complex. There may be some through traffic too. Not very many of them, I don't you would find them very disruptive. Besides, they're fun to look at.

Specifically, most (or almost all) of the UP through freight trains use the paralleling Milwaukee Subdivision which runs right alongside US41 through most of this area. The mainline through downtown Lake Bluff doesn't see much through traffic anymore but they can and do use it as an alternate in case the other route is blocked.
