I bicycled up the river trail to coonskin from barlow drive and there was a mudslide over the trail. It was a mess. They also destroyed the woods across the duck pond for a golf driving range. That area had some real nice trails. Now it looks like a desert. The duck pond is all muddy. The place is being destroyed.
The construction at the airport caused a bunch of mudslides on the river trail. They fix one and another slide comes down. They have decimated all the trees. it looks terrible. At coonskin by the pond they clear cutted a hillside for a golf driving range. There was some beautiful trails up in there. Now all gone.
What might any of you folks out there know about the bridge being built across the river to Coonskin Park from Rt 119? They have recently surveyed and marked it right near the dip/rock cliff before you get to Elk Hills off the Mink Shoals exit. A neighbor spoke w/surveyor when they were marking it....like many of you, I will miss the old trails that have been destroyed for the driving range. I could get great pix from up there across the river towards my house in the fall. :-)
I run there, and I have to resort to running the main road to geta almost decent run in.
I thought the bridge was just a rumor, I hope the put it in. It would really help the park.
If it was me, there would have been a bridge there years ago!
Sad to hear what they are doing to Coonskin. Hopefully there is a fix being planned by the City of Charleston Parks and Recreation Dept. I may have to put in a call to John Charnock.
We used to go up there on lunch break sometimes to walk or feed the ducks.
CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- More than 20 volunteers descended on Coonskin Park early Saturday morning, determined to get their hands dirty while cutting and building a new 700-foot-long trail through the park.
is it hard to get to coonskin park im trying to get too a tennis match up there
nope, not at all!
Where are you coming from?
-----If from Greenbrier St. "exit with state capitol complex---I-77/64" head north towards the airport. When you get to the split where the four lane either takes you to the airport or the road heads right, go right. Turn Left at the first traffic light. There will be a Go Mart there. Follow that road and it will take you directly into the park!
----If from I-79. Get off at Exit 5, which is Big Chimney. you will come to a four way. There stay straight and go across the Elk River. Turn right at the next traffic light. Follow that road until you come to the next light. There will be a Go Mart. ----you will pass by Capital High School---- turn right at the light and that road will lead you into the park
hope this helps!
