That is a pretty impressive plan. I like the effort being put into these ideas. Charleston is going to come along well.

Is it bad that I'm rooting for the demise of USPS so the distribution center downtown can get demolished? Keep the post office - it's beautiful. The facility behind it, though, is an eyesore and a waste of space.

Yeah where the facility is would be great for development. Wish there would be some way to allow that to work.

There is. There's more than enough space in the warehouse district or other outlying areas of the city. It doesn't need to be attached to the post office at all, and would probably be better served outside the immediate downtown area where it can be more easily accessible by trucks (not that there are any problems now).

But because it isn't an immediate need, and the facility is at least suitable for the Service, you won't see it move any time soon. But if USPS goes belly-up, you can bet CURA would jump all over the opportunity to tear down a building people actually want gone.

I could actually see that building being re-used for something instead of its destruction. Imagine a facilty owned and operated by the Clay center that has large exibits and attractions for Clay center visitors. it would have things like simmulators, repleca spacecraft, ect... and would serve as an extra addition to what the Clay Center already offers. The building would stay, but around the building where parking and loading docks are now, there would be apartment/office/retail/ type development built up against it to the side walks.

It would be kind of like the Town Center is with the parking garages smashed up against the mall itself. Heck one of the exterrior structures could be a parking garage for the Clay Center/ New Library/ Fairfield and Best Western/ retail and apartments/ anything else in the area. There would be apartment complexes with retail and restaurants on the bottom floors. Plus a visitor center for the city could serve as an enterance into the re-used PO facility.

That's not a bad idea. Parts of the facility would need to be retrofitted for extra height space to accommodate larger pieces, but I can envision a pretty cool place. Why not take the aerospace idea and run with it?

I say establish a modest air and space museum in the space. Have exhibits highlighting WVians in aerospace, (Chuck Yeager, John McBride, Homer Hickam, etc.) maybe even a model of Chuck Yeager's supersonic aircraft (which he just replicated a couple of days ago, at 89!). Have NASA partners with in-state presences have an exhibit (NOAA in Fairmont, RCB aerospace institute, etc.). Even open it up to commercial space ventures like SpaceX, if they wanted to. There could be interactive stations for kids, more historical things for veterans of life, really a great mix for a wide variety of visitors. And definitely have a large wing dedicated to military technology and service, which can partner with the Air National Guard.

I'll make a siteplan on Google Maps for the whole block. What do you guys think of the idea? It could be a great niche attraction for the region.

I think we are on to something here!

I like the air/space idea because WV could showcase alot. Yeager Airport could help aswell!
