He was beautiful and I'm so sorry for your loss. He sounds like he was a great companion. And what a good cat parent you are.

I'm so very sorry for your loss. I've never heard of this, it sounds awful. It's bad enough to lose a sweet sweet friend and family member, worse still when there was horrible pain involved. Loss of one we love is always difficult. God bless.

My condolences. He was an adorable guy.

I've heard of this condition, and usually there's no treatment (or it's sketchy at best) so you did the kindest thing in letting him go. I'm sorry.

I’m so sorry for your loss, he was beautiful.

I had never heard of this until this summer. My ginger cat’s back legs got tangled up together when he was walking one evening. We rushed him to the vet. They mentioned saddle thrombus, but after exam and x rays he was diagnosed with spondylosis.

Now I know to check for cold feet.

I lost a cat to saddle thrombosis. It was my Annie, who was only about ten years old at the time.

Her front end worked perfectly, but her back end didn't. The local vet wasn't familiar with this problem, but recommended a specialist vet in a city about two hours away by road. I bundled Annie into her carrier, put her in the car, and off we went.

The specialist confirmed that it was a saddle thrombosis. Basically, what it is, is that cats have one artery serving their hind legs. By way of reference, you (a human), and horses, and dogs, and most other mammals, have two: one to serve each hind leg. But cats only have one, which splits at the base of the spine just before the tail, to serve the legs, and if a thrombosis (a clot) occurs at the base of the spine, then cats' back legs are useless. As is pretty much of a cat's back end. They cannot stand, and their rear paw pads are cold.

If caught early enough, there are treatments, but time for this problem is measured in hours, as I was given to understand, and I found Annie in this state when I woke up that morning. No idea how long she had suffered. Then, there was the trip to the local vet, and the two-hour trip to the other city. In the end, it wasn't pleasant, but I asked the vet to do the kind thing to Annie. She was beyond help at that point, and could never jump and play like she always had. Unable to walk, run, or otherwise move; her quality of life was at zero. I was in attendance for the procedure, and I--calmly and in a friendly way--reassured Annie that I would meet her at the Rainbow Bridge. She passed peacefully.

And then I lost it.
