I would like to live in Santa Cruz and commute to Monterey for work, so Santa Cruz to Monterey in the mornings and Monterey to Santa Cruz in the afternoon. Does anyone currently drive this similar commute and if so how is it? Stressful or painless?

It's not too bad.
You're going in the right direction.
You'll be passing the truly painful commute as people head north into S.C. county, join all the other people from S.C., and then have to drive over the hill (HW17) to San Jose.
Without traffic i can get to Monterey in less than an hour and it's a breeze.
During rush hour (heading back to S.C. for example) there's some congestion in the Carmel, Pacific Grove, Monterey area itself and then it lightens when the lanes increase and then it becomes two lanes as you get closer to Moss Landing and it can be a bit slow until HW 1 lanes increase and then it's relatively easy going.
It's the accidents that often slow things down.
If you're fortunate enough to live in S.C. county and have a job in Monterey, i wouldn't let the traffic deter you.
You'll just be really happy that you don't have to do the Santa Cruz/San Jose commute.
Now that one is stressful!
