I paid $220k for a 3 bed 2 bath house 3 miles from the ocean. Depending on which way the wind is blowing I can hear the surf.

  • In a clean, low crime city that's aesthetically pleasant, has excellent shopping, dining, and entertainment options. Is walkable and has good transit options but is also not dense and is both bicycle and car friendly and an active night life.
  • Has to be at or walking distance from the beach.
  • Must have year round pleasant weather.

As a paying consumer, that's what I want and demand. It just seems so frustrating that I can't seem to find all of that so easily; it seems that one benefit comes at the expense of another. I don't want such a city to exist but then be fleeced to the tune of two mil for a house. I don't want a brand new one for $275k but then be stuck in that hellholle purgatory known as the Central Valley. Why can't everyone ELSE move to those places that I can get what I want?

Come on. Help out a longtime fellow CD'er here.
I get that you are being satirical, but don't understand what your satire has to do with OP who asked a reasonable question and can actually attain what he is looking for. $500k isn't one of those unrealistic budgets.

Check out:
* Santa Maria and nearby cities (Orcutt, Guadalupe, Lompoc)
* Salinas, Watsonville
* Pretty much anywhere near the coast from the northwest corner of Sonoma County (Sea Ranch) on up to the Oregon border

Of course it's possible, just not in the popular, trendy places.

I used to live on Miami Beach. I'm not interested in trendy places. I'm an old man with health problems. I want peace and quiet, good hospital within reasonable distance and I only speak English which became a problem in Dade Cnty and still is.

Yes! There are a few listed right now on mod and several sold the past few months. Most dated, but a few completely updated. You'll have a wider range available if you go a bit smaller, but yes you can find 1500sq ft.

If I remember I'll post actual links when I get home....dunno how to post links on my iPhone. Lakewood mall is exactly 9 miles from the Belmont shores beach, just a couple miles more to seal beach, one of the nicest communities in so cal. Gardena is less distance than that from gorgeous South Bay beaches.

Also, There are TONS of massive medical facilities near both locations. I'm a huge fan of Kaiser(not everyone is) since their doctors on the same campus tend to easily share information. It helped me a great deal with a life threatening medical condition and my gp, surgeon, specialist, and infectious disease doctor all spoke to each other and shared info. For Gardena, Kaiser has a great newly expanded facility in Harbor City...about a ten minute drive down the 110 fwy from Gardena. Lakewood has the huge Bellflower facility nearby.

Btw your money for a house will go farther in Bellflower or Downey, but you'll be more than 10 miles from the beach.

John how much further?

I looked at Temecula but it seems like one has to drive across a mountain in order to get to the coast and it's 45 minutes at least. Yikes!
