Can anyone suggest a reasonably safe, reasonably priced beach town in southern california? We're young, and are accustomed to living in some unsavory areas here in Massachusetts, but we both like our living environment to feel clean and friendly. My husband likes the city feel whereas I like small town feel, but it's important that we both live very close to the ocean, within walking distance, if possible. If it helps, he's in computer engineering and I'm a high school teacher. Thanks to all who respond!

I dont think it possible to have all the above. There isnt such a thing as a reasonable priced beach town.If its safe its expensive. But someone here might prove me wrong.Moderator cut: advertising/signatures not allowed

I Can't Sell My House
I just meant reasonable for what I'm getting. I can't afford to pay $1,000,000 for a home, but I understand that buying a condo in a semi-nice area will set us back. I'm looking for area suggestions that are middle ground. I live on the coast myself right now, just on the other side of the country.

Pismo Beach might work for you.There are a few towns near there also that might be what your looking for. If you are wanting to be more south maybe a town called Carpinteria, it's a quiet safe place.

What about San Clemente in south Orange County. It is not cheap, but it is a great beach town that is about an hour from San Diego and Los Angeles. It is safe and clean too. It depends on what your definition of a reasonable price is though.

What would be your housing price range or rental budget?
Do you think you will have kids in the next five years? If so, will both of you continue working?
Where does your husband want to move to? (If you can't answer this question then it looks like you have a lot more research to perform. I would expect by now that he knows where the jobs are, what typical salaries are, and what housing prices are.)
There are plenty of CE jobs in California. Most places that have a) jobs and b) are near the beach are extremely expensive. One of my buddies got a good job with Intel but it isn't near the beach. Goleta has engineering jobs (Raytheon for example) but it is extremely expensive up there.

san clemente is a really nice beach town. it is in the middle of san diego and los angeles about a hour drive. It feels like living in a small town but able to drive to the bigger cities! i use to live there and its great. tons of restaurants in the area mostly locally owned. everyone is friendly. i was even friends with my postman just from him dropping my mail off. he even gave me my mail when he realized i moved to a different apartment instead of sending it back like he was suppose to! its a clean place like you wanted to and there is a bunch on community events such as the ocean festival...
