Been 12 years since I did it, and I imagine the traffic is even worse now, but I remember sitting in genuine traffic the entire way from LA to Vegas on a Friday afternoon/evening/early night and then driving back at 4am on Sunday morning (as in late Saturday night) so we didn't have to put up with it again. That seemed to work. Pretty much straight shot.

But then again, I guess anyone driving from LA to Vegas on a Friday afternoon is kind of asking for it.

Friday PM can be hellish heading there. Same for Sunday coming back, Monday if it's a 3-day.

Long, hot and dusty.
With todays gas prices you are probably cheaper off flying.

I've always loved that drive! There is something majestic about the desert and seeing miles upon miles of it as far as the eye can see. Nothing but sunshine and blazing temps. Take your time. Hit up the rest stops. Throw back a few cold ones when filling up the petro. Bask in the anticipation, soon to be tearing it up in Sin city. From greater LA, it's a about a 5hr drive. Roughly 4.5 if you can manage cruising at 85mph without getting cited by CHiPs. It's a sight to behold once the Vegas skyline line is evident in the distance. It's party time!

What's with the trucks driving on the shoulder? Is there some kind of trucks-only lane?

Fun the first two or three times. Then long, dusty and boring. Oh, HOT too.

I was once forced to return to LA on a holiday weekend. The return took over 8 hours, the wife actually stepped out of the truck to relieve herself and I only moved maybe 8 feet.

I have done it in 4 hours, with light traffic (middle of a weekday) and it has taken me as long as 7 hours (weekend traffic). I usually fly, faster and much less stress and hop a cab from McCarran to the Strip or where I need to go.
