Please just tell me I can find something:

* Non-rural

* A 2,000 (or bigger of course ) sq ft. home for $700k (or less of course )

*Within an hour drive of one of the big three (LA, SF, SD)

*Where people are socially progressive

This is all I require.

You should try the Bay Area. The San Jose area comes to mind but not sure about housing prices. Also, try Morgan Hill, Gilroy, Hollister, Santa Cruz, Gilroy, and Watsonville.

Santa Rosa, Rohnert Park, Concord, Dublin, Pleaston. All within the Nine County Bay Area Region. I would throw in Ventura which is about an hour and some change away from LA proper, but SD is quite the conservative stronghold, as well as many LA suburbs that fit your price range.

Aliso Viejo is almost midway between LA and San Diego and it’s located right next to Laguna Beach. In fact, during the non-tourist season, one can make it to the beach from the corner of Aliso Creek Road/El Toro in ten minutes.

Aliso is
densely populated @ about 48,000 in less than 10 sq. miles. AV was incorporated 11 years ago. The city is very small and hilly with 23 parks, flowers and trees. Unfortunately, it looks like a mini-Irvine with lots of cookie-cutter houses, some attractive, but with the bonus of the aforementioned hills and lots of flowers; plus a town center. Hiking and biking trails are abundant and Aliso overlaps a 3900 acre wilderness preserve, Aliso and Woods Canyon.

Politics: Liberals, conservatives and “don’t label me.” “Yes” to Obama and “No” to Prop 8.

Finances: The city is sound with a revenue surplus. The city attracts a lot of venture capital dollars.

Safety: Very, very low crime.

Schools: Good public schools. There's also one private
International Baccalaureate school and one university (Buddhist-inspired).

Sports: Aliso Viejo Aquatic Center, Ice Palace, Renaissance ClubSport (Basketball, yoga, spa, boot camp, aerobics, weights, racquetball, squash, kids’ world, nutrition, swimming, fusion cuisine, bar, fire pits around the pool, live entertainment, etc.), Aliso Viejo Golf Course and the Azarian International Gymnastics Center.

AV has an environmentally conscious city government which recently approved a “Green Initiative,” an organic ranch and at least one “complete street.” Although it’s not an environmental issue, the city has also given the green light for a dog park and is just awaiting final approval from the coastal commission

Here’s a sample of houses that are at least 2000sq ft and are listed for 500-700K. Inventory is currently low.
55 BLUEBIRD Ln, Aliso Viejo, CA 92656 | MLS# S692956
17 DIAMOND GATE, Aliso Viejo, CA 92656 | MLS# S704440

Uh, not quite. San Jose has one of the highest priced housing markets in the country and is more expensive than both the LA and San Diego areas. The Bay Area as a whole is one of the most expensive places in the country.
