I have an old picture from April 1983 with my brother and me on that trail, but the trail wasn’t built out (it was only primitive, and with no railings IIRC) and in the picture we’re at a fence blocking further progress up to the crows nest. The chain-linked fence has a clear NO TRESPASSING sign on it.

Was the crows nest being built in April 1983? When was the crows nest and its trail at Niagara Falls built?

The photo is here, it’s the 5th photo out of the only 13 photos I still have from that epic 1983 roadtrip.

Thanks!

I never heard a reference to "crows nest" before, but the picture looks like the walkways at the base of the observation tower by the American Falls. FYI these walkways must be rebuilt yearly as they get wrecked by the ice that builds up during the winter. There are also periodic rock slides, and last year I saw that the upper portions of the decking were blocked off. I don't know what changes happened over time, but the observation tower was rebuilt shorter around 2003, so I assume that there was also likely some improvements to the walkways at the base around then, too.

Well okay, but it is Google Maps that calls it the crows nest.

OK, I learned something new today. I never knew it had a name. I was down there was last summer when I took the Maid of the Mist with visiting family.
