I am considering moving (currently in GA)- and Boulder is one of the cities that peaked my interest... I noticed on some other threads that people had said that it was hard to meet people/make friends. I will be moving with my 2 small children-Since I will not know anyone, I would like to move someplace where it's easy to make friends. I want to move to a smaller (not tiny by any means) metropolitan area that is family friendly, artsy, and somewhat affordable- everything is more expensive than GA- but Boulder looks to be more affordable than the Seattle area for instance. Any info would be greatly appreciated.

Boulder's cost of living is without a doubt higher than the Seattle area, and would not be described as affordable.. Think about Louisville,Lafayette area..they are within a twenty minute commute to Boulder with much more affordable family friendly options.

I wouldn't say that Boulder is any less expensive than Seattle. Finding an apartment can be difficult, some properties have waiting lists. While I find Boulder (and Seattle for that matter) to be a beautiful city, I didn't find the people to be nice. My apartment search there was met with many unprofessional attitudes so those experiences have had a profound impact on my opinions of Boulder. I lived in Seattle for two years some time ago and loved it but the latitude and cloudiness became draining. The people there are friendly and shy. Something about the cloudiness makes people rather passive. Boulder is sunnier but much more brutal in climate than Seattle due to rapidly occurring changes and occasional strong winds. I would agree on your assessment of Boulder with the exception of costliness and, from my experiences, unfriendliness. On a lot of fronts, however, you can't do better than Boulder.

If Boulder and Seattle are on your list, you might want to also consider Missoula, Montana. Similar weather to Seattle and quite artsy and cultured for a city of under 100K. Definitely cheaper than both cities.

I was born in Boulder and lived on the Front Range all of my life. People in Boulder are very rarely from Boulder, so those unfriendlies are probably from some other state. I think native Coloradans are very friendly, to the point of almost naivety.

We moved to Louisville a few years ago. Best Places to Live 2009 - Top 100: City details: Louisville, CO - from MONEY Magazine We only knew 2 people. Now we have so many friends. Our kids who are now 16 and 14 have also done well making friends in their new schools. This is by far the friendliest place I've ever lived (NY,MI,TX,LA & CO)!

Many other parts of Colorado are much friendlier then Boulder. Colorado as a whole is the most friendly place I have lived, but Boulder tends to only be friendly if you are 20, have several piercings and or tatoos and drive a Prius. It is after all a college town. It is a beautiful city , but the cost of living is very high and the people can be more then a bit annoying. I've lived in Ca,Ks,Fl,Wy,Tx in addition to Co and and the friendly chart would be Co,Wy,Tx,Ks,Ca,Fl in that order. Kansas City is an often over looked area that people were always pleasantly surprised with when they would come to visit. Great Museums, some artsy areas, VERY family friendly and very affordable.

The biggest problem with Kansas City is that it has a serious lack of mountains.

I never thought of Missoula, MT, a city in the intermountain west, as having a similar climate to Seattle, on the ocean/bay.

Ya , I saw those figures myself about a year ago.. but having watched the Boulder market closely ,the City of Boulder housing figures are much different today..Boulder had steadily increased up until early this year..Boulder housing average fluctuates in the low- mid 500's now. Seattle is in the high 300's,low 400s..Seattle has higher taxes though. neither town is exactly cheap. City data also gave Aspen a 125, and Seattle a 127 on the cost of living index.. so needless to say I am pretty skeptical on many of the so called stats on here. I have found City data is often way off in their data on certain real estate markets, just as Trulia, and zillow often are
