Exposed Part 14

Posted 08-30-2008 at 09:26 AM by Pam& Bill

For those of you that are regular readers of my blog... I wonder if you picked up on the part of our story that was missing?
Last week I realized that August 28th was coming up. Now this is an anniversary of sorts for Bill and I. Three years ago when Katrina was bearing down on the gulf coast, we admitted we loved one another. So I decided that the 28th of August would be an appropriate day to finally make this whole relationship legal. Well legal in the eyes of the law, not to us because we had considered ourselves married for quite some time.
So I called the local Magistrastes office on Wednesday morning to make an apppointment for the next day. I was told no appointments were made, it was a first come first serve type of thing, we'd have to take our chances.... so we head over to the courthouse to get the license at the Register of Deeds office, we have all our documents that we need to prove who we are and that we are divorced from our previous spouses. We fill out the necessary forms and Bill asks the clerk if there is someone who can help us jump over the broom stick available?
She is highly amused by us and directs us upstairs. Bill asks me if the magistrate isn't busy today, want to just do it? Never one to turn down a impulsive thing to do as life is an adventure to be lived to the fullest, I say sure why not?
We find the magistrates office, there is a guy that looks to be about my age sitting there. I ask him if this is the place where someone could marry me? He grins and says well I'm already married but come on in, I talked to you this morning. We hand him the triplicate of forms, he dashes off to find 2 witnesses. We get asked one last time if we are sure this is what we want to do? I find that some goofy entity has taken over my body, seems I can't stop grinning from ear to ear. As he is filling out the forms, we are chit chatting and we realize he has a great sense of humor. Well he is the perfect guy to marry us....I feel the goofy entity about to make itself known to one and all. I point out my tee shirt has Mak the *** on it. The judge comments on how he noticed, but he didn't want to say anything..... I comment on how I have no flowers, he hands me a bunch of bananas.
Then he gets to work, reads the vows and by 3:15 P.M. on August 27, 2008 Bill and I are married for real. We had done it, got married in jeans and tee shirts, witnessed by 2 strangers, married by a judge with a great sense of humor. He takes us back down in the elevator back to the register of deeds office and hands in the paperwork, gets things started on my name change. I asked him if I was really married because I hadn't signed anything with my new name, he assures me we are his 247th wedding and we are really legally married. We received a keepsake copy of the marriage license, which is a nice touch.
I keep waiting for the shock to wear off and the knowledge to sink in. Also I'd like to clarify why I referred to Bill as my husband before now, at our age, calling one another boyfriend or girlfriend was silly and I disliked Significant Other. Husband or wife was easier.
But we did the wedding thing in our own style just like we live each day. I wouldn't change a thing.

Congratulations! It was a long time coming but better late than never as they say. LOL I love the part about the bananas. That really fits yours and Bill's wacky sense of humor. I'm happy for you both.
