High School

Posted 08-01-2008 at 10:35 PM by East Coast Wanderer

I often think about the education I received in high school and have come to the conclusion it is not enough.

I've always thought of high school as a very sterile environment. Granted we need the knowledge received in school but we also need live knowledge.

We were restricted to the students in school but were never taught about what people are really like. There was no teaching of budgets, responsible credit, bill paying, relationship handling, etc., etc,

Hopefully the school system has changed because school and life are so different it's not funny.

The Vo-Tech classes offer career knowledge but we need to know how to interview, write resumes, handle people, make and keep budgets, etc.

Life has a lot to offer but we need the knowledge to start a good life. I have more life knowledge than school knowledge. School really did not help me learn about people and life. That's sad.

My high school taught us very little, if anything, about real life. The best lesson I ever got in school was at Gibbs in Montclair, circa 1964-65. The instructor told us "Never get into revolving charge accounts." Now THAT's practical knowledge! I don't know what they teach kids today, except how to pass entrance tests for college.

    Hi Mike,
I understand what you mean, and you are right about that, the thing is that I have been a teacher for 5 years and although I love working with teenagers , the schoolsystem really made me sad and angry. Just for the fact that we were obligated to work through the system which I didn't agree with. Especially because I think that being a teacher is more than only explaining whatever subject you have to explain. I always tried to "teach" the pupils more about life and things that matters as well.. How to deal with certain aspects of life, futureplans, family things, work, whatever issues thosse children have at that age..or might come across in life.. and I really adjusted that in my teachingprogram. Still sometimes it was hard to do so cause the board wanted to see results and that's the problem too , it's just about numbers..as long as no parents complain , nothing will be changed.. really parents should stand up for their kids when it comes to the system I think cause most of the times teenagers arent taken seriously..

    HI Michelle,
I see your point too and for some reason a lot of kids see their teacher more than that they actually see their parents cause most of the times both parents work or dont have any intrest in what their child is actually doing at school.. or learning .. you cant really teach a child all life matters perhaps, but you can make a child aware of the importance of certain matters in life..at the end him or her choice to make .. but maybe one day when something happens in your life .. somewhere down the road you might be inspired to act on it in a way which strenghten your insight and your being and prevent you from being judgemental at that certain point in life

WHOLE-HEARTEDLY AGREE! No economics, literature as an elective, teachers that can't teach a foreign language, etc, etc, etc
My best advice to anyone who cares - GET AN EDUCATION ANY WAY YOU CAN - BEST WHEN YOU ARE YOUNG BUT NOT REQUIRED - Even us "old guys" can always learn something new.
