Let me say a big welcome to all of you for joining me here. I'm going to call these blog meetings Case's Column. I wanted to use "Corner", but that was already taken.
Since 2008, it's been a real privilege to come on here and share some of my life with you, and it's a big world where we live.
In these blogs, I'll just speak whatever is on my mind, but we will be playing within the rules here. I may pick a particular topic, point out an event, or shoot the breeze. I'm a little bit of an essayist at times, so I'll just speak what's on my mind, and I might tell a story or two. Or, I might spew out an opinion or three. There will be some serious moments, some tender, some poignant, but there will also be those moments that you'll just bust out laughing. But, hopefully, everything will be in good fun here. And, of course, there's a place below for your comments and thoughts as we go along here. So feel free to join me for the ride -- I sure as heck hope I'm doing this right and not making any mistakes.

Lubbock Postcards: Road Bond Passage And Taco Bueno's Demise (Again)
In the Llano Estacado, we've recently had the good news and the bad news. So which do you want first?
Well, let me get the good news first for Lubbock, and it really is good news. Citizens there actually passed a road bond proposal in this, the 2022 election. Oh, yes, they did. This is the first time since 2009 since this city experienced such an event. Last year, we can forget (when a similar street bond was rejected by citizens), but Lubbock managed to make up for lost time. A grass-roots effort to educate the community on the positives of growth was in effect and ongoing. Let's face it, y'all, Lubbock is experiencing the most unprecedented growth spurt in its history, and it is far from over. Roads in the city not only needed to be newly built, but existing ones needed expansion. Even better, folks: Dirt roads in certain neighborhoods are finally getting pavement. By the time I get back there, either next year or the year after, we should expect to see some big improvement in mobility, and just good, old-fashioned common sense with streets.
Now, the bad news: Taco Bueno tried once again to make inroads in Lubbock to provide competition for other area taco chains, most notably Taco Villa, which is still king to many Lubbockites. The Abilene-based chain tried making its re-entry with a location on 82nd near Milwaukee Avenue, but has recently closed.
You would think that, with the aforementioned growth in the area that Taco Bueno could easily take advantage of such an opportunity, with the chance at gaining multiple locations.
Doesn't look like it now.
The reason is usually down sales and lack of customers. Whichever reason you can guess at, the location is now shuttered. This all but kills any chance at Bueno trying to make a comeback in this area and give residents here another choice. The city has Taco Villa, Taco Bell, Taco Casa, and various taquerias in town.
Lubbockites, carry on. Hope the area has as prosperous a 2023 as anyone can try to have.

Well, looks like the Home2Suites on the NW corner of Ave. Q and the Marsha Sharp Frwy is back on, according to Lubbock in the Loop. That and the Avid Hotel on Glenna Goodacre (a lot of progress on that) should make Ave. Q look more presentable.Posted 12-07-2022 at 03:33 AM by shoe01

^^^ That's good news, shoe. Avenue Q has both its good and bad, and it's got a ways to go to shore a few things up. North of Marsha Sharp will be a little tougher to do, but south of it should be gravy. Most of what's there should stay there, but buildings that are in poor condition do need to be torn up and replaced with something new.
As for the two hotels, basically, it's the down economy that was holding those up. I should expect those to get to their completions in due course.Posted 12-07-2022 at 06:38 PM by case44

Also, more on-topic, but 19th Street close to the Tech campus should be finished by summer (doesn’t help much with the spring semester, I guess). The downtown portion, in between Avenue Q and I-27, could take a bit longer because of previously unknown, antiquated municipal infrastructure that was discovered while digging up the old surface. Then they have to fix the part in between University Ave. and Ave. Q. That should be a cakewalk in comparison, at least for most motorists.
However, I wonder if once 19th St. is finished, then they’d start work on Ave. Q itself (not in great shape). Then after that’s done, would it be University (hopefully when classes are out of session from May-August)?Posted 12-08-2022 at 10:30 PM by shoe01
