Welcome To Case's Column

Let me say a big welcome to all of you for joining me here. I'm going to call these blog meetings Case's Column. I wanted to use "Corner", but that was already taken. Since 2008, it's been a real privilege to come on here and share some of my life with you, and it's a big world where we live.

In these blogs, I'll just speak whatever is on my mind, but we will be playing within the rules here. I may pick a particular topic, point out an event, or shoot the breeze. I'm a little bit of an essayist at times, so I'll just speak what's on my mind, and I might tell a story or two. Or, I might spew out an opinion or three. There will be some serious moments, some tender, some poignant, but there will also be those moments that you'll just bust out laughing. But, hopefully, everything will be in good fun here. And, of course, there's a place below for your comments and thoughts as we go along here. So feel free to join me for the ride -- I sure as heck hope I'm doing this right and not making any mistakes.

Thanks for taking your time in reading Case's Column. Hopefully, you'll enjoy being entertained by it as much as I've enjoyed putting these writings together. And thanks for the time you spend in City-Data.com, where it's great to be alive!

Regards,

Houston Bids Thanks To Dave Ward For Fifty Great TV Years

Posted 05-07-2017 at 09:14 AM by case44

Even though I've always wanted to live in the Houston area, the opportunities to move there just never have panned out. I would have loved to have moved to that area. Katy would be ideal, since it doesn't flood as much there as other parts of the area.

But that's not why I'm writing this. I'll save the side dishes for later. As much as I hated not living in Houston, I've missed so many great things about that market, only to make up for a smidge of that courtesy of YouTube.

This post is about a legendary local guy who has graced Houston television screens with the news. In fact, this guy's done it for fifty years, holding the Guinness record for the longest tenure on the same newscast on the same station in the same market. I wonder if he'd ever retire, but he doesn't believe in it.

Dave Ward is that guy. He's been at KTRK-TV (Channel 13) from 1966 until, technically, the end of this past year. Dave Ward was on the tube this past week to say one final goodbye to his audience. It'd have been to be for December, but sudden heart issues forcing surgery had prevented him from a more proper farewell. Channel 13 brought him back, and he's doing better, but after looking at the video of his actual farewell, he really appeared to be in no condition to do news. Let's face it, folks; we all get old at some point.

But Ward was a special kind of newscaster. He had a long history of excellence and consistency, and he always engaged his viewers. Every newscast he anchored began with "Good evening, friends..." no matter who sat next to him at the desk. His time at Channel 13 began with him as a field reporter and host of "Dialing For Dollars". That was in '66. Two years later, his historic anchor run on Eyewitness News began. Whenever it came time for me to go on vacation to Houston, Dave Ward was on my bucket list of people I would watch on TV. There were other people through the years: Ron Stone, Steve Smith, and Bill Balleza (the last remaining stalwart from the 1970s in Houston), but Dave was always there.

While Channel 13 will never completely be the same again, Ward's legacy will live on. Hopefully, it will rub off (if it hasn't already) on the other anchors who will succeed him at the desk. Thanks, Dave. Fellow Texans will miss you!
