Welcome To Case's Column

Let me say a big welcome to all of you for joining me here. I'm going to call these blog meetings Case's Column. I wanted to use "Corner", but that was already taken. Since 2008, it's been a real privilege to come on here and share some of my life with you, and it's a big world where we live.

In these blogs, I'll just speak whatever is on my mind, but we will be playing within the rules here. I may pick a particular topic, point out an event, or shoot the breeze. I'm a little bit of an essayist at times, so I'll just speak what's on my mind, and I might tell a story or two. Or, I might spew out an opinion or three. There will be some serious moments, some tender, some poignant, but there will also be those moments that you'll just bust out laughing. But, hopefully, everything will be in good fun here. And, of course, there's a place below for your comments and thoughts as we go along here. So feel free to join me for the ride -- I sure as heck hope I'm doing this right and not making any mistakes.

Thanks for taking your time in reading Case's Column. Hopefully, you'll enjoy being entertained by it as much as I've enjoyed putting these writings together. And thanks for the time you spend in City-Data.com, where it's great to be alive!

Regards,

Bring Back The CBS Late Movie -- Just Like Old Times

Posted 05-04-2017 at 08:50 PM by case44

Of course, we've got hundreds of choices on television nowadays, what with cable and satellite dishing out so many channels. Pun intended.

So, are the broadcast networks just getting tired? They've got no new ideas, no good comedy writers like before, and late night television is just not as good anymore. A few years ago, I wrote about Dave Letterman giving way to Stephen Colbert, and what we speculated it would bring.

Yep, something all too predictable.

Not just Colbert, but all the other late night hosts. Too much politics, and the lame attempts to try to be funny on those subjects. They need to try other ways to be funny rather than beating Americans over the head with the endless and needless bashing of President Donald J. Trump. People are tired of that.

I'll tell you what would be a great idea. That's if a network like CBS can bring back an old classic. I'm talking about "The CBS Late Movie". That was a classic in and of itself. Look, I might not be able to watch every single feature put on, as I like some genres better than others, but "The CBS Late Movie" had a special flair and was a late-night staple for many folks more than three decades ago. What would be even wilder would be if the network can present it exactly the way it used to be? I know, I know. Network TV has changed significantly since that time, and TV themes have mostly become a thing of the past. And, furthermore, networks don't do those old-fashioned identifications just before the local station breaks anymore. You're just not going to see them.

Still, though. The late night movie. An American staple. It was great for local TV, and it was great when CBS put it on against Johnny Carson (still the king of late-night in my book) and ABC Late Night (remember that??). Wouldn't it be something to see that again?

Maybe some cable network will come up with an idea to take people back in time. Preposterous? No, not at all. Not impossible, either.

I wonder often what kind of movies a modern-day CBS Late Movie would show Americans; what would it show?

This, we'll all have to ponder....
