A Haunted Past in Charlotte County- Florida

Posted 04-10-2017 at 01:17 PM by llrivero

***** A Haunted Past *****
I am always fascinated by ghost stories, the paranormal, and history that can lend a hand in the haunting of a building...
I posted an article a while back about Lake Okeechobee and the mass graves that were discovered in the lake...... the hurricane that killed so many people that ended up in mass graves......... the area surrounding Lake Okeechobee and the banks of the Lake have many stories dating back to the 1800's of people claiming to hear sounds of whimpering, sobbing.. and full body apparitions.
I did a little research on our local area and came up with a few other local "Haunts"........
There is the Sandlin house in Punta Gorda haunted by the ghost of young Mary Sandlin. She was burned to death by a malfunctioning, gasoline-fueled clothes iron, and now is said on occasion to flit about during the night strewing laundry through the house.
The Hermitage house at Englewood was said by various owners to be visited at times of serious illness by the spirit of Grandma Johansen slamming her bedroom window and tipping over her old chair. Supposedly she is searching for her "sacred lead" which she burned in life to cure sickness.
When the Chadwick brothers sold their fish business to the West Coast Fish Company in 1926, after 25 prosperous years, Steve and Clay returned to Lemon Bay from Punta Gorda to begin the development of Chadwick Beach -- now Englewood Beach in Charlotte County. During development they came upon human skulls and various bones. Ultimately they discovered a deep mass grave about 50 feet long and 8 to 10 feet wide. Bodies had just been thrown into the mass grave together..... no markings..... no clothing....... no tools...... nothing. The real estate development came to a drastic and sudden halt. Later a similar mass grave was found just north of the now Englewood Beach, in Manasota Key... further research shows these mass graves were of Indians from 120 to 320 A.D.
How many ghosts do you think visit the developments and homes along Englewood Beach and Manasota Key?
Did you know that the activity in our local area is prominent enough...... that we have our own Paranormal Research Group in Punta Gorda? We do!!
