Welcome To Case's Column

Let me say a big welcome to all of you for joining me here. I'm going to call these blog meetings Case's Column. I wanted to use "Corner", but that was already taken. Since 2008, it's been a real privilege to come on here and share some of my life with you, and it's a big world where we live.

In these blogs, I'll just speak whatever is on my mind, but we will be playing within the rules here. I may pick a particular topic, point out an event, or shoot the breeze. I'm a little bit of an essayist at times, so I'll just speak what's on my mind, and I might tell a story or two. Or, I might spew out an opinion or three. There will be some serious moments, some tender, some poignant, but there will also be those moments that you'll just bust out laughing. But, hopefully, everything will be in good fun here. And, of course, there's a place below for your comments and thoughts as we go along here. So feel free to join me for the ride -- I sure as heck hope I'm doing this right and not making any mistakes.

Thanks for taking your time in reading Case's Column. Hopefully, you'll enjoy being entertained by it as much as I've enjoyed putting these writings together. And thanks for the time you spend in City-Data.com, where it's great to be alive!

Regards,

Putman's Impact On Country Music Can't Be Overlooked

Posted 11-01-2016 at 06:38 PM by case44

Country music through the years has seen so many legends. They'd carry a voice or an instrument or a pen or, in other cases, two or all three of those listed. In any event, magic was going to be made.

Beginning in the 1960s, such magic was being made during the most explosive decade in country music history. A young fellow from Alabama gave his hand to the profession in that era and, for the next two decades, brought a new brand of poet to the genre. Curly Putman was that songwriter who, in his early years, would produce singles and albums in his own right but would concede to contributing to other artists' successes in subsequent years.

Our music universe just lost Curly Putman. He ran out of gas at age 85 after a long illness, but not before, he had been one of the most prolific writers the genre had ever seen. And just look at the hits he created, many of them with colleague Bobby Braddock. The list is a legendary classics library.

"Green, Green Grass Of Home"
"My Elusive Dreams"
"It's A Cheatin' Situation"
"The Older The Violin, The Sweeter The Music"
"Dumb Blonde"
"I Think I Know"
"Blood Red And Goin' Down"
"He Stopped Loving Her Today"
"Smooth Sailin'"
"Do You Wanna Go To Heaven"

And there were many others.

Even Paul McCartney, who spent six weeks visiting at Putman's farm in 1974, was inspired to write a song about Putman. Paul cooked up "Junior's Farm", and called Curly "Junior". Claude Putman, Jr, was his given name; that's what inspired it. Too bad McCartney never tried to make a country hit, and I don't believe he's had one, but that's not important now. Curly Putman was also inducted into the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame in 1976. Well-deserved for a hitmaker, I'd say. Yes, he may be gone from us now, but his legacy, his mentorship, his influence, his hits will continue to live forever. The artists who have recorded those hits (along with many which I didn't mention) have him to thank.

Curly, we'll miss ya! Thanks for your life-long contributions, the great songs that made country music a great genre.

I have to say that I've always enjoyed your country posts in the Music forums. You just bring some magic to the table, and it's always a hoot to see what you post there.

And I also have to tell you that Free For All just isn't the same anymore. We used to have some fun on that thread, especially your Fun Friday bits that you liked to do, but I know you've migrated to other threads just to keep it entertaining. You just have great taste in music.

Hope you have a great Thanksgiving!
