Welcome To Case's Column

Let me say a big welcome to all of you for joining me here. I'm going to call these blog meetings Case's Column. I wanted to use "Corner", but that was already taken. Since 2008, it's been a real privilege to come on here and share some of my life with you, and it's a big world where we live.

In these blogs, I'll just speak whatever is on my mind, but we will be playing within the rules here. I may pick a particular topic, point out an event, or shoot the breeze. I'm a little bit of an essayist at times, so I'll just speak what's on my mind, and I might tell a story or two. Or, I might spew out an opinion or three. There will be some serious moments, some tender, some poignant, but there will also be those moments that you'll just bust out laughing. But, hopefully, everything will be in good fun here. And, of course, there's a place below for your comments and thoughts as we go along here. So feel free to join me for the ride -- I sure as heck hope I'm doing this right and not making any mistakes.

Thanks for taking your time in reading Case's Column. Hopefully, you'll enjoy being entertained by it as much as I've enjoyed putting these writings together. And thanks for the time you spend in City-Data.com, where it's great to be alive!

Regards,

Las Colinas: Still Not Finished After All These Years

Posted 06-18-2016 at 08:41 AM by case44

The vision began about four decades ago. Ben Carpenter, longtime Dallas developer, had a dream for his ranch. That dream turned into reality, and businesses and residents would begin flocking to a section of Irving, Texas, which today bears the name of Las Colinas. It's a spectacular combination of businesses, restaurants, hotels, shops, and residences, all centered around its highly-publicized urban center core.

As for the urban center itself, well, here it is, the year 2016, and it's still not finished yet. Not even close.

You'd think in an area like Dallas-Fort Worth is, there'd be lots of takers in the biggest gamble of Ben Carpenter's business life. Some have moved in, and others have moved out. Oh, there's new construction going on, all right. The latest thing is happening at the intersection of O'Connor and Las Colinas Boulevards, and that's the new Gables Water Street project. It's supposed to be really nice. It had been delayed for a few years for various reasons, but work has finally gotten going there.

Here's a peek at it for you:

In addition, if you were to drive along Las Colinas Boulevard east of O'Connor, you will see that there is still quite a bit of empty land left and rife for development. So far, those are just empty lots, but they're waiting for something to happen. Heck, I can't even wait for an explosion of growth there. Las Colinas Blvd is the most exciting corridor in that area, already bustling with some incredible things, and it's only going to get better.

Still, I wonder how long it will take before the urban core finally gets built out. Will I be alive when it does happen? There's no answer for that. Not now. But as long as Dallas and Texas have strong economies, there's no doubt that someone can step in at any time to be part of Ben Carpenter's ranch. It'd be worth their while........and ours, too.
