Welcome To Case's Column

Let me say a big welcome to all of you for joining me here. I'm going to call these blog meetings Case's Column. I wanted to use "Corner", but that was already taken. Since 2008, it's been a real privilege to come on here and share some of my life with you, and it's a big world where we live.

In these blogs, I'll just speak whatever is on my mind, but we will be playing within the rules here. I may pick a particular topic, point out an event, or shoot the breeze. I'm a little bit of an essayist at times, so I'll just speak what's on my mind, and I might tell a story or two. Or, I might spew out an opinion or three. There will be some serious moments, some tender, some poignant, but there will also be those moments that you'll just bust out laughing. But, hopefully, everything will be in good fun here. And, of course, there's a place below for your comments and thoughts as we go along here. So feel free to join me for the ride -- I sure as heck hope I'm doing this right and not making any mistakes.

Thanks for taking your time in reading Case's Column. Hopefully, you'll enjoy being entertained by it as much as I've enjoyed putting these writings together. And thanks for the time you spend in City-Data.com, where it's great to be alive!

Regards,

Scattershooting / The Loss Of A Texas Sportswriter

Posted 04-29-2016 at 07:20 PM by case44

Here I go again with more Scattershooting right here on City-Data, where it's great to be alive. And here you go again with reading this blog page and becoming more informed each day, you'd swear you must have been at a Holiday Inn Express. Let's get the proceedings underway.

The inspiration (in part) for my Case's Column blog page has just passed away. He was a longtime Texas sportswriter with his own backwoods personality and dry wit. Blackie Sherrod, an absolute titan of a sportswriter and columnist for two Dallas newspapers, not to mention a Dallas legend, died yesterday at age 96. He'll long be known for the way he wrote his sports columns and the fact that he mentored a number of fine sportswriters and newspaper folk. Some say that The Dallas Morning News' hire of Sherrod in 1985 was the final nail in the coffin for The Dallas Times Herald, as he had so many followers who enjoyed his work. He is the inspiration for this thing called Scattershooting, which he did every Sunday morning in the Sports section. It's what I do here from time to time.

Rest in peace, Blackie.

Speaking of sports, the NFL Draft is this weekend, live on location in Chicago. ESPN is all over this event like gravy on chicken-fried steak. Many NFL clubs are seeking to fulfill some needs in the field. I'm tuning in to see what my Houston Texans will be doing and who they're drafting, but I'm also glued to whatever the team I grew up watching, the Dallas Cowboys, is planning to do with their picks.

Mother's Day is coming fast to us, only a week from Sunday (May 8). I plan to meet my mother at a fancy restaurant nearby and treat her to dinner, so your favorite blogger will need to get those reservations all firmed up. Take time to send your mother a card. Maybe surprise her a little.

Imagine having a pet with really large teeth in your backyard. Just don't keep it in your swimming pool. One lady out there got to keep her special pet.........for a very long time. See just how she pulled it off.

I may not be much of a hockey watcher, but I've got to give my local Dallas Stars some due credit. They are in the NHL Stanley Cup playoffs and are currently playing the St Louis Blues in the latest round. If they advance, then it will be to the conference finals.

Want to see an odd-looking car? A Nebraska man got pulled over by a state trooper not too long ago. Could this be a new innovation in automobile-making? Wood-n't you like to know???

Sirius XM's 60s on 6 jock Mike Kelly has really been the Iron Man for the channel in recent weeks. Pat St John has been out with a serious spine injury sustained in a recent fall, and Dave Hoeffel took some vacation time last week, followed by Phlash Phelps the last couple of days. Whew! That's a lot of airtime for Mike, as he's had to work 12-hour days just to accommodate the schedules of said absentees just to keep things playing.

No firm word yet on midday man St John's return to his usual perch.

By the way, 60s on 6 needs to consider filling a void for West Coast listeners. Most nights, there is no deejay after 8 pm Pacific. They could use a jock to fill, at the very least, two hours of programming, possibly three. Just an idea, Lou Simon (the channel's program director). Can you see what you can do with that?

Will Ferrell was about to do a movie about our nation's greatest president, Ronald Reagan, in his early stages of Alzheimer's which occurred during his second term in office. He has since backed off of that idea.

I could not see Ferrell playing him. Doesn't quite fit the mold. He really ought to stick with Ron Burgundy. Even though the movie is planned as a comedy, I don't feel the subject matter is appropriate.

Like to travel? Moreover, do you like traveling as a practicing vegan? You'll want to take a few notes from this idea which real burger lovers have a real beef about.

The fourth phase is beginning on the Hebron 121 Station development in Lewisville, Texas. Huffines Communities has been busy with their many projects in my area alone, but they are especially getting things rolling with this latest new phase of units, four buildings (three residential and one retail) along with a sand volleyball court.

Some 450 units are going to be added. And, best of all, many more palm trees will be planted, as well.

Hope you enjoy the rest of your spring. It's such a special time of the year. Got some big things coming up in May besides celebrating our mothers. The Byron Nelson and Colonial golf tournaments will be in earnest around my neck of the woods, and high school seniors will be preparing for their big day, the day they graduate. May will be upon us.

And there you are.

Have lived in Texas my entire life and didn't know where the term "scattershooting" came from until yesterday. Did learn about Sherrod though when a longtime columnist/sportscaster in San Antonio retired around 20 years ago (the local paper asked for & got Sherrod's opinionated him, which seemed to surprise the local guy, Dan Cook). Looks like both are in a better place now.

Ah, yes. The legendary Dan Cook, late of KENS-TV (Channel 5) and the San Antonio Express-News. That was greatness right there.
