Your First Package

Posted 03-29-2016 at 12:05 AM by aliasfinn

Do you remember the first time you ever got a package delivered in the mail ? I remember mine, I was just a little fart back in the 60s when I sent cereal box tops away for a plastic Woody Woodpecker door knocker. I would ask my mom each day if it came and she would say it's too soon. Days went by and every morning at the breakfast table I would see the Corn Flakes box and start thinking about my missing door knocker. I began to get angry, thinking that the cereal company was trying to pull something, that they were more dishonest than I was.
Me " Dad, can we sue the cereal company?"
Pop " Be patient boy"
Then one day it finally showed up and it had my name on the package, even though the old man bought the cereal and paid for the postage/handling. It wasn't quite what I expected, kind of chintzy. It didn't take long for my brother to destroy it. For a long time the grisly remains were in my toy box until my mom gave the whole box to Goodwill. I didn't care because that made room for the electric football game and hockey game I eventually got. That football game was kind of dumb, no matter how you lined the players up as soon as you turned on the switch they all vibrated over to the sideline and began dancing with each other. I had received many packages in the mail since that day and always enjoyed seeing them on my porch. Nowadays I get ulcers when I'm expecting one, too many thieves follow the delivery drivers and when the driver hops out of the truck in his short pants and chucks the package on your porch and books away, it's like a Connecticut Easter egg hunt, you have to race out your door before someone else scoops it up.
