Welcome To Case's Column

Let me say a big welcome to all of you for joining me here. I'm going to call these blog meetings Case's Column. I wanted to use "Corner", but that was already taken. Since 2008, it's been a real privilege to come on here and share some of my life with you, and it's a big world where we live.

In these blogs, I'll just speak whatever is on my mind, but we will be playing within the rules here. I may pick a particular topic, point out an event, or shoot the breeze. I'm a little bit of an essayist at times, so I'll just speak what's on my mind, and I might tell a story or two. Or, I might spew out an opinion or three. There will be some serious moments, some tender, some poignant, but there will also be those moments that you'll just bust out laughing. But, hopefully, everything will be in good fun here. And, of course, there's a place below for your comments and thoughts as we go along here. So feel free to join me for the ride -- I sure as heck hope I'm doing this right and not making any mistakes.

Thanks for taking your time in reading Case's Column. Hopefully, you'll enjoy being entertained by it as much as I've enjoyed putting these writings together. And thanks for the time you spend in City-Data.com, where it's great to be alive!

Regards,

Case's MLB Predictions For 2016

It's that time of year again, folks. We've got another Major League Baseball season almost upon us and almost in full swing....

As spring warmups near an end, every MLB team is optimistic in thinking that this year will be their year. We'll just find out, so let's take a look at the teams and how I believe they will finish come October, with some hints on the thereafter.

AMERICAN LEAGUE

EAST
1. Toronto Blue Jays (99-63)
2. Boston Red Sox (88-74)*
3. New York Yankees (82-80)
4. Baltimore Orioles (77-85)
5. Tampa Bay Rays (73-89)

CENTRAL
1. Kansas City Royals (88-74)
2. Detroit Tigers (83-79)
3. Minnesota Twins (81-81)
4. Chicago White Sox (68-94)
5. Cleveland Indians (65-97)

WEST
1. Texas Rangers (93-69)
2. Houston Astros (92-70)*
3. Los Angeles Angels (82-80)
4. Seattle Mariners (75-87)
5. Oakland Athletics (61-101)

NATIONAL LEAGUE

EAST
1. New York Mets (87-75)
2. Washington Nationals (82-80)
3. Miami Marlins (76-86)
4. Philadelphia Phillies (75-87)
5. Atlanta Braves (69-93)

CENTRAL
1. St Louis Cardinals (95-67)
2. Pittsburgh Pirates (90-72)*
3. Chicago Cubs (86-76)
4. Cincinnati Reds (77-85)
5. Milwaukee Brewers (70-92)

WEST
1. Arizona Diamondbacks (96-66)
2. San Francisco Giants (95-67)*
3. Los Angeles Dodgers (83-79)
4. San Diego Padres (74-88)
5. Colorado Rockies (55-107)

*Denotes Wild Card Entry
AL Pennant: Toronto
NL Pennant: Arizona
All-Star Winner: American League
Champion: Arizona

Thoughts from both sides: The NL Central will be competitive, but I'm still picking St Louis for the division until someone actually dethrones them. The AL West could become the Battle of Texas for the next few years, as the Rangers and Astros will duke it out for state supremacy. Look for Toronto to be for real in the AL East, and a lot of people believe last year was no fluke. The Braves are in their final season at Turner Field, but SunTrust Park isn't the only thing the franchise is building. Watch for a new division champ in the NL West, where the Giants' biggest threat won't be the Dodgers. In the AL Central, Kansas City will win the division, but it won't be easy this time. Too much unproven starting pitching. This year's NL Cy Young winner almost certainly will be a New York Mets starter. You heard it here first.

Some of you may be shocked at this year's projected pennant winners, but this could come out one of four or five different ways. I think that any of six or seven different teams could be a World Series champ this year. For now, though, the above picks are what I'm going with.

And there you are. Play ball!

    Nice, bold picks, Case.

I especially like the Cardinal pick, too. My Cards managed to pull off what many didn't think they could last year, and although I still believe they'll be right there at the end this time, I doubt that they'll win 100 like they did last year.

I also think the Mets might be a little better than '15, but I doubt you'll see a rematch with Kansas City. I'm surprised you didn't pick the Astros to go all the way. Sports Illustrated has that much faith in them.

I didn't want to jinx the 'Stros, and so, I had to try to pick someone else with a real opportunity at contention. And there's something about the D-Backs this year that, if everything goes right, then they could surpass everyone in the majors.

My hope is for Houston to win the marbles, as they are long overdue and are starving for a winner. They're not off to a good start right now, so coming home to play may just be what they need.
