Things I remember buying

Posted 01-12-2016 at 09:55 PM by aliasfinn

I was thinking back of all the stuff I used to buy when I was a kid that probably doesn't exist anymore.

1. Space Food Sticks. They were about the size of a pretzel rod and came in at least two flavors, chocolate and peanut butter. They claimed astronauts ate them when they were in space. They came wrapped in a paper foil and didn't taste too good.

2. I can't remember what these were called but they were some of the most awful candy you could buy. They were those little candy dots they used for decorating cakes and came glued on a sheet of wax paper. They were hard to remove from the paper and had very little flavor.

3. Candy Necklaces. Another dumb idea for candy. They were little pill shaped candy on a string that you could wear around your neck. They left a sticky mess.

4. Around 1971, I remember something they sold that they had in the candy section that wasn't for consumption at all. It was a little plastic bottle that came with a tiny straw that contained a gum-like substance. You were to dip the straw into the bottle until the end of the straw was caked with that substance, then pull it out and blow a bubble which would permanently harden when exposed to the air. The stuff smelled like lighter fluid. It was probably poisonous and most definitely flammable. It wasn't on the shelves very long, some little numbskulls probably ate some and became sick.

5. There were these little pieces of hard gum that were pink and kind of shaped like lifesavers. You were supposed to keep it at the end of your mouth and whistle thru it before chewing them. The gum wasn't all that good, kind of like the gum in a pack of baseball cards.

6. For 20 cents you could buy an airplane that you assembled that was made out of balsa wood and propeller driven by a rubber band.

7. Next to the penny candy the cheapest thing you could buy was a 3 cent box of salted pumpkin seeds. You were better off sticking your pennies in the gumball machine.
